Yuki (19) months old, just started acting very strange about an hour ago. He was standing near the kitchen watching me cook, when he jumped up in the air twice as though he was being stung. He frantically ran into the hallway, jumped again, then ran and hid up the stairs. We have checked him over thoroughly and can't find any area where he seems to be hurt. His stomach looks fine (not distended or tight), his gums are nicely pink, and he appears to be fine physically. I brought him outside and he peed and pooped as normal. He even ate a hard boiled egg as a treat and drank some water. I was also able to get him to chase a tennis ball in the house for a minute. But he is panting on and off and looking around frantically as though he is scared. He just acts like something has frightened him terribly. I used a calming pheremone spray on the couch and have him laying up here with me. When he didn't calm, I gave him a valium (leftover prescription from neutering 6 months ago) about 20 minutes ago. He is still panting softly - about 140 breaths per minute. The vet is closed, but I am happy to bring him to an emergency clinic if he doesn't seem normal soon. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? He had a wonderful morning as a therapy dog with me, and has been fine all day. He has never acted like this before. You'd think he'd seen a ghost! Would sure appreciate it if anyone has any ideas or advise.

Can't imagine he was bitten in the house, but he acted like he was being stung by a bee or something. Cannot find anything; have checked him over thoroughly repeatedly. We are texting two vet techs we know, but still hoping for advice. I know everyone feels this way, but Yuki means the world to me!

This is not advice, but we had similar experience with Ollie. We were outside with him all afternoon. We mulched, he chased balls, ate, chewed bones, dug holes, etc. Later when it got warm, he wanted to lie inside. He went in his normal preferred spot in kitchen and slept for couple hours in a/c. We could see him thru the slider as we were just beyond that in backyard.
Later, when we came in, he was hovering in little bath off kitchen. He does go in there on occasion, but he was acting weird. Just kinda standing there.
Then for rest of night (maybe 2 hours) he was the same. He would rest then get up and pace a bit.
I checked everything on him, no bites, no temperature, no nothing. It was just like he was spooked about something. But there were no fireworks, or storms, and he doesn't startle easily by those things anyway.

Later that night, he refused to go in his crate for first time ever. As he was so off, I let him sleep on his bed next to my side of bed. I tossed and turned all night with him all night, at one point found him standing in corner.
It was the oddest thing and I was going to haul him to vet in morning if he wasn't normal but he really wasn't sick and he was his old self when we woke.
?????
I dunno.

I think you should at least speak to a vet if possible. My vet has an after-hours phone line. Perhaps yours does, too? He's probably just fine, however for your own peace of mind, it would be nice to speak to a doctor.

Respiration down to 44, and he's acting like he's totally back to normal. The whole episode lasted 2 hours. Very scary. Will keep a close eye on him and if it starts up again, I won't hesitate to take him to the emergency hospital, as our vet is not open again until tomorrow morning and does not have an after hours number. Thank you so much everyone for your support and suggestions. It is so wonderful that this forum is here for us!

Could be because of the electrical storm but my first thought was allergic reaction. Our Zeke behaved sort of like that before showing further signs of a bad allergic reaction. I'd watch for swelling of the snout, red eyes, signs of itching. Any of these would be signs of allergic reaction. If so you should consult an emergency vet. They would probably tell you to bring him in asap and start benadryl.

Thank you, TheZ's. Yuki does have skin allergies, and is on Benadryl morning and night for them. I will continue to check him over thoroughly for any sign of a bite showing up. Right now, thankfully, he is totally back to normal after a very scary 2 hours.
It's hard to imagine it was the storm, because he's never reacted to storms before, the storm was not very intense, and it came and went in about 10 minutes, but the episode lasted 2 hours. You never know, though!
I'm wondering, do dogs ever jump up in the air when they are having a seizure? Yuki started out by jumping up in the air twice, and his eyes darted around on and off for the next hour. Not jerking around in a way I would typically associate with seizures though, more like he was seeing something that was scaring him, and then checking to see if it was still there.

This is not advise, but I had the same experience with one of our Golden's a few years ago. He was about 8 months old and all of a sudden jumped and yelped like something had bit him. He ran into the other room into a corner, sitting, and shaking. He would not let us approach him, growling, and threatening. After about 1 hour he slowly came out, but was not normal in behavior for a day or two. We could find nothing wrong, no bites or anything. Our vet also found nothing wrong. It never happened again, but wow it was strange...Good luck

I hope your baby is feeling better this morning.

I am also thinking maybe a bug bite or sting. My dachshund got stung a couple of times recently, he acted the same way. I could not tell where the sting was but was going by the area he chewed on and gave him some Benadryl. He eventually lost fur on the area he chewed on, so I figure bee or wasp sting, they really start to itch after a couple of days.

My lab mix has a bug phobia, he acts like that at times when a bug buzzes him.

I did talk to the vet, and she does not think it was a seizure. I guess it will remain a mystery. Yuki was totally back to normal 2 hours later, and woke the next morning ready to take on the day. Can't see any aftereffects at all. He did therapy dog work the next afternoon and had a ball. He's been fine ever since. Go figure!
I sure do appreciate everyone's help and response when i posted. Thanks again!
