2 Golden Girls in need of assistance

On July 24th on my way home from work I picked up 2 female Golden Retrievers running in the median of a busy highway during rush hour traffic. Both were infested with fleas and immediately treated with Frontline. Despite efforts to find their owners, ads, local vets, etc. I have had no luck. One of the girls has a microchip but after calling all the chip manufacturers and AKC we found out the chip is not, nor has it ever been registered. They are both great dogs, well mannered, lots of energy, love to play ball and snuggle. I ran Heartworm tests on them today at work and unfortunately they are both positive. I have started them on Heartgard in hopes to prevent further progression of the Heartworms, but I personally cannot afford the optimum method of treatment for HW disease. Due to the fact that I already have 6 dogs of my own I am not able to keep them and so far have had no luck in finding them their forever home. I am in sincere hopes that someone might have room in their hearts for 2 great family additions. I am willing to foster them as long as needed if everyone can simply help spread the word that that these great girls need a home of their own.

Check Craigslist and the local papers for lost ads, and maybe post found ads. Also I would call the local pound and let them know incase the owners look for them there. You could also get in touch with a golden rescue. Thanks for stopping for them and taking them in.

If only you were closer..i would help out. Do you know how bad of heartworms they have? Like did you see microfilaria under the microscope?

I have contacted GR rescue, shelters, and posted ads on and checked for listings on Craigslist, as well as posting them on FB (not only personal, but on the clinic FB in which I work for). Unfortunately after the initial contact with the rescue and many attempts since, I have not had any returned responses from them. We did find microfilaria on the darker (Aria) of the two, but not on Penelope, the lighter one.

With not finding microfilaria on the one you may be able to just do the slow kill with heart guard. The other one would probably need the other method after a workup on the heart. You are an angel doing all this for them already. I really hope someone closer can step in and help them. I would take them if I was closer but I dont want to stress them with a long transport. Maybe someone here can...that would be nice. I cant believe no owner was found or came forward, they look like awesome dogs!

Gorgeous

They are absolutely gorgeous girls.
I would call and email the GR Rescues in TX, again.
If they have room for them, I'm pretty sure they will save them.
Where in TX are you?

Reminds me of my old animal loving Office Manager. She traveled 20 miles of rural back roads in SC every morning to get to work. One day she showed up for work quite late, hot and sweaty and all disheveled. "Sorry I'm late, but I had to do a save." She passed a lost and obviously not street-wise dog dodging cars in the road and pulled over. Poor dog was spooked with the cars honking and not knowing which way to turn. She went after him into the woods and finally gained the dog's trust to get close enough to put a leash around its neck (always travel with a leash and biscuits ... just in case). She then proceeded to go door to door in the sparsely populated neighborhood and finally found the home where the poor dog slipped out of unnoticed. She returned the happy dog to the grateful owners, but only after she shared her opinions on dog safety.

Kudos!!! The rescue will find them great homes. I donated to that rescue a few months ago.

Not many people would go to the lengths you did. Extra pair of angel wings for you :D

Welcome to the Forum! And bless you for trying to help these girls.

Please please please talk to your vet. My understanding is that giving heart worm preventatives to dog that is already positive for heart worms can be deadly, causing heart failure.

That is not correct. Dogs who are infected are given Heartgard, specifically that brand, while they are infected to prevent the heartworms from reproducing and increasing the number of worms. We do this with every heartworm positive dog that comes into rescue, before, during and of course after treatment.
