Travis, A Golden is in Need of Help...GRAPHIC PICTURE INSIDE

BIO: We know this is a shocking photo but this is a tragedy and you need to know what can happen to a happy, tail wagging golden retriever. This is Travis. He is 55 pound 3 year old male that was first rescued by Dekalb Animal Control. He was found in the woods - and we do not know what caused his serious injuries. It appears he may have been caught in a razor wire fence - we say trapped because his injuries were several days old. Dekalb AC immediately called us for help and we rushed to get him and brought him to VCA Buckhead Animal Hospital where he will be under the care of Dr. Davis and several other vets and staff there. He has SEVERE, deep, infected wounds that encompass his entire ventral chest and under both armpits. The wounds are about 6-8cm deep and contain large amounts of dead tissue, debris and maggots. He also had smaller abrasions and areas of dermatitis around his rectum (more maggots here too). Thankfully, he had been sedated at the shelter, IV fluids started and antibiotics given and he was shaved. Once at our vet, they continued IV fluids, gave him medicine to kill the maggots and began cleaning his wounds. Remarkably, his tail didn't stop wagging. He was so grateful. He was given more antibiotics and Fentanyl patches were placed for pain control. His bloodwork showed mild anemia, low platelets, low glucose, low potassium, low albumin. He is getting supplements. If he is stable on 5/23 he will go to surgery to start surgical wound cleaning and closure. The wounds will have to be closed in stages. Our big concerns are for him are: 1. Infection turning into sepsis 2. He will need multiple surgeries to get everything closed and timing will be determined by how he heals and handles anesthesia. Too long and his risk for sepsis will skyrocket. 3. As he heals the scar tissue may hinder the movement of his front legs - too soon to tell. We think he'll be able to walk and run and jump eventually but it may take awhile to get there and we will most likely have to ask our friends at Georgia Vet Rehabilitation for help. In the meantime, we have to raise lots of money for this boy. Right now we are estimating we need to raise at least $4,200. We have started the Travis Fund so please give if you can. We are also going to give Travis his own facebook page so stay tuned for that. You will be able to track his progress. Travis will let you know a little later how he is feeling- right now he's too sick and hurting too much to talk.

Aww yeah I saw this on their FB page...so sad. AGA is a awesome rescue group...no doubt he is in wonderful hands. Their screening process is very very thorough, no doubt one day he will go to a wonderful home.

Okay, I couldn't cope. I donated. Hope this puppy stands a chance of healing and getting a good home.

Poor Travis... Such terrible wounds and I'm sure a long recovery is involved. He has undergone his first surgery and is doing well. Check out the Facebook page link for updated info. Prayers are heading your way pretty boy for a speedy recovery.

I went on Travis's FB page today and they say he's doing well. They also said the donations exceeded their goal. Which is wonderful news. I too donated last night because it broke my heart to see this beautiful golden boy suffering from terrible wounds.
