Bad knees-please help!

Our beautiful boy Tucker is almost 20 months old. His parents had AKC certification, OFA clearances of hips and elbows, etc., but nobody said anything about knees. A few weeks ago he fell on a slippery floor and has since had episodes where he lifts up a back leg for a few seconds, then straightens it and seems okay again after a few steps. This sometimes happens after running or jumping and can be accompanied by a little yelp. The vet referred us to an orthopedic surgeon, and he has bilateral medial patellar luxations, left worse than right. They say this is congenital, not traumatic.

We're planning to have the left knee reconstructed in two weeks, then will probably repair the right knee in a few months. Does anyone have experience with this? How can we tell whether he's in pain? We have Rimadyl but are not sure whether he needs it. Prior to the surgery, we're encouraged to walk him gently as much as possible (he currently walks on his leash about 2 miles every day and does fine but is not supposed to run or jump) to keep up his muscle strength and general health preoperatively. After the surgery we're supposed to keep him on "bed rest", in a crate or small pen for two weeks with only quick trips outside to potty. How can we keep a 20 month old dog relatively happy and comfortable in a pen for two weeks?

We would very much appreciate any advice, especially suggestions about how to keep Tucker comfortable and how to get him through this. Thank you!

My heart dog, first golden had a laterally luxating patella... She was operated on,when she was 7 or 8 months old. Never limped a day in her life. That was MANY years ago, Her leg was wrapped for support and it was for about 6 weeks...
