Question Am I crazy??

Loki, our beautiful GR baby, is almost five months old. Apart from the odd bit of misbehaviour, he is well-behaved & settled. He is great around other dogs, & I know he would enjoy a companion to romp about the garden with him ...our six year old papillon gets on well with him, but he is not at all playful & I think Loki gets frustrated when he attempts to engage with Jontay, who is totally not interested in playing or running about in the garden with him. So I have been thinking maybe we should look at adding another dog to our family .....we have a large back garden with high fences. My husband & I have talked about it & we both agree we do not want to go through young puppy stage again, so if we did add another dog to our family, we would want it to be a young adult, & female, as Loki is quite a dominant young fellow. My hubby would love another german shepherd. I'm not so sure about that, but keeping an open mind. I was just casually looking at pups/dogs for sale & spotted one just listed today .....a pretty GR girl aged around a year old to the right home ....the people say they just do not have enough free time to give her the attention she needs, & they will shortly be having a baby, so will have far less time for her. I have messages them, asking some questions. Below are the two photos which they put onto the listing. I would really appreciate thoughts on this. I know this girl is now in the dreaded teen years that I keep reading about on the forum. Questions I asked. ....what training has she had .......does she respond to basic commands ......does she walk nicely on leash she used to being off-leash in safe public areas .....does she recall well ......has she been exposed to cats & how is she with them .....does she get along well with other dogs. Can anyone think of other important questions I should be asking? I cannot view her, as she lives about 3 hour drive from us, so six hour round trip.

She is a beautiful girl . Maybe ask about what vaccinations she has had and if she is spayed?

Sorry, meant to say that she is microchipped & spayed. Listing states that her name is Lily & that she is a good-natured dog with a high tolerance to children. I have just put a phone all through to them & left a message on their mobile phone. I guess i should also be asking about her health & if things progress any further, perhaps ask for a letter from the vet, to state she has no known health issues? would it be appropriate to do that? Would have to change her name, as one of our cats is called Lily, & that could become very confusing lol. hanks for reading my posting Briana, & responding.

It would absolutely be appropriate to ask about her health history. If they know it, I would also ask whether they got her from a breeder, pet store or where. That should also give you some indication of her potential health in the future. She's darling, and I think you should get her

I don't think you are crazy...I have already thought about that in a year or so..and we haven't even gotten Sage home yet...I do know though that I don't think I would get another puppy...I'm pretty sure this will be our last one and then we will rescue...

Good luck with Lily, she is pretty. I would ask the health questions and the temperment questions, and also request a meet before you decide. Keep us posted

You're doing exactly what I just did when I brought Bella home. I heard about her by accident (on this board) and looked at the ad. It had been in the back of my mind to bring home a female for Tucker who would match his energy level. He has always tried to play with Tess, and she has never been interested save for the occasional bouts of tug of war.

I think if you ask all your questions and like or can live with answers, the real decision has to be up to your other two dogs. But you do need to be prepared to walk away if its a bad fit. I took both mine to meet Bella. Tess was sort of "meh," but Tucker loved her from the get go and it was mutual. It has worked out well--it's taken a lot of pressure off Tess, and Tucker has a great time. And my daughter and I are completely in love with Bella now.

We've had a few bumps on the road but it has been worth it. Good luck! Come back and let us know what transpires.
