So, why is my puppy different?

Well now that Koda is healthy and all I just thought I'd ask. Every time I look upa golden retriever puppies at the same age as my Koda (12 weeks) they are all fluffy and kind of chubby looking. My Koda has real short fur and he is more slender but in a somewhat muscular way. I mean, he is still under 10lbs so maybe he's just underdeveloped and that's why?

My Holly was the same way as a puppy, and she has grown to be tall slender and muscular. She has beautiful silky hair...looks a lot different than my other golden Misty, who is thicker and stockier....but I love them both!!

Max wasn't a fluffy puppy and now he's got a luxurious full coat. He's also got a stocky build with ginormous paws.
I don't think puppy coat relates to adult coat, but since Max is my first golden I could very well be wrong. What do your puppy's parents look like?
I also think the lighter goldens seem to be fluffier, I think.

I didn't catch what his original health issue was, but if he wasn't eating well for a while, he'll be a bit behind physically. It's not necessarily a problem for the long term, so don't worry too much.

Different pups have different coat types, just like adults. And many of the puppies you see may be chubby, which is not what you want for your dog. Lean pups grow with fewer issues and lean adult dogs live longer, healthier lives.

He is still a puppy and growing. Pups change as they grow.
Didn't you say you got him at 6 weeks old? Perhaps, he is
a bit smaller now because he was taken away from his mom
too soon.

Jersey has a shorter coat too. I've questioned many times if she's part yellow lab but her parents are both akc. I do notice her coat is getting fuller on the back as she gets older and her tail seems to be filling out more. She's definitely not a fluffy puppy at almost 5 months though! She's also got the ginormous paws and she's a beast. 30 pounds at 4 months.
