Smile Too much lovin' I guess

Sorry this is a long post!

I haven't posted for awhile. It's been busy busy! Some of you might remember I had posted that my DH's 92 year old Grandma moved in with us in July. Since then, it's been a wonderful love affair with her and Storm. It's great because he keeps her company while we are at work and the boys are at school.

Storm went in for his annual check up in November and weighed about 77 lbs. Everything was fine.

About 2-3 weeks ago, I noticed a hot spot on the side of Storm's face. I took him to the vet, she shaved the affected area, gave me antibotics and said to keep the area dry. Storm got weighed again while we were there. When I came back to pick up Storm after about 15 minutes, the vet came out and said that the antibotics needed to be used up but another thing she was worried about was Storm's weight gain. I said "what do you mean? How much weight has he gained?" I think my jaw hit the floor when she said he has gained 8 lbs since his check up in November and this was in February.

One of the biggest rules I told Grandma was absolutely NO PEOPLE FOOD for Storm when she moved in. DH (Chris) had told me that her previous dog was overweight because she would give him toast, marmalade, tea and basically any food that they ate so I was worried about that. She said that she will gave Storm dog treats only.

I come to find out that yes she has been giving him dog treats but 2-3 times a day and probably about 3 treats each time so that is about 6-9 treats a day for how many months? This is on top of his 1.5 cups of food 2x a day too. So as soon as I left the vet, I went home and told Grandma that Storm is only allowed 1 treat a day and upped his walks and exercise.

Before Grandma moved in with us, Storm actually lost weight from when we got him. He weighed 85 lbs when we adopted him in Nov 2010 and 77 lbs when he got his yearly check up in Nov 2011.

Grandma couldn't believe it when I told her that Storm had gained all that weight. "Just from a couple of treats? That is ridiculous!" I said he is turning 7 years old in April and its not good for him to be overweight so please try to refrain from giving him more than 1 treat a day. I think she took it personally because she gave the box of treats back to me and said that she will not be blamed for his weight gain.

That was about 2-3 weeks ago and it's calmed down. Now she shows Storm love by giving him affection, not food.

I guess you can't blame Grandma for loving Storm too much. I do!

I can't say anything about Grandma, because that would be the pot calling the kettle black.
I too have been trying to substitute more loving for treats, but those eyes get to me all the time.
give Grandma a hug for me and tell I know how hard it is to resist.

I can't resist him when he looks at me so I give him the biggest cuddle ever. You should see how he is with Grandma when she comes out for dinner. We have a nook and she sits on the outside and he nudges his head between her arms until his head is wedged in and she has to pet him or have her arms around him. A couple of times he almost knocked her glass of wine out from her hands. It's funny to see. He is just not satisfied till he gets her full attention. He's Grandma's dog now. I'm just the person who walks and feeds him.
