Ben and I are taking a two hour drive south next weekend to meet up with a Samoyed breeder at a dog show so that Ben can interact with her Samoyeds and make sure his allergies don't flare up. We've been talking about getting another dog for awhile now and conversation has picked up massively within the last week. We're laying plans for fencing our yard and making a staircase into it off our back deck, we're clearing out and setting up our spare room and semi-finished basement (that have literally been closed off and untouched for the entire year and a half we've lived here) in order to maximize house space. I've been reading up on the breed, health concerns, and the breeders as much as possible. We've got a savings system going because we know that getting a well bred puppy is going to be quite a bit. I feel like we're having a baby or something, haha! Hopefully we can keep busy enough to stay distracted for another 9 months to a year, because I refuse to get another puppy before we are 100% ready and that's about how long it'll take.
I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions about the various breeders we come across because I don't think I trust my own opinion alone. Not to mention all the questions about how to help Iorek prepare for it/adjust. We're going to start working on reliable "off"s with our bed and couch because I'm pretty sure he thinks they are just as much his as they are ours and I don't want him to feel like he is entitled to guard them. I think we're also going to try to arrange playdates with other dogs he is familiar with in our home to see how he responds to sharing his space/people and to evaluate potential problem areas. The sun and moon rise and set around getting to play with other dogs for him, but I'm really nervous about whether that will apply to dogs in his home...
But mostly, I think I am going to explode with excitement. Getting ready for another dog is crazy!
