Sensitive paws?

I trimmed the hair between Penny's pads and for the first time ever she acted like it hurt. She kept wanting to pull back when I cut. Not when I touched her feet or moved the hair around to get it ready to cut. I was very careful. She didn't mind when I pushed it up between the pads and cut from the top. And she didn't mind getting her nails clipped.

I'm wondering if all her 'forced rest' on carpet and short, limited walking for potty only has made her paws more sensitive. And if that's the case, how should I handle it when, in a couple of months, we can start walking her a bit...5 minutes, once a day at the start. Plus, we'll be in a Michigan winter with cold and snow on the ground. She's not a booty type dog.

Do they toughen up fast? Should this be a concern?

I know Jasper is just like that, but it's because it tickles him when I trim that hair.

Oh! I hadn't thought of that!! Might be because I let it go since before her surgery and was really long!
