Question Is my dog just blowing his coat? Or is this how is fur is going to be forever???

I have a golden mix. I know mixes are all different and you can NEVER be sure what they'll look like when they have their final coat. His coat is very similar to a golden's though, and I was just wondering if any of you have experienced the same thing. (I have had a purebred golden before, but I was only 4 years old when he was a puppy so I don't remember)

My dog started off having a rat looking tail like most golden puppies, which started to grow out and look like it would start feathering. At about a year, his tail was super fluffy. I figured since it had grown out and wasn't puppy fur, that this was a part of his permanent coat. But then once he started to go swimming and stuff in summer, it started falling out in clumps, and just a few months later his tail has almost no fluff at all. I know that they blow their coats in the summer. Is that most likely what this is? or was all that fluff he grew for no reason at all? I know its impossible to be sure since he's a mix, but any input would be appreciated.

Heres his tail from 10 weeks to now:

Your right, that he had a nice fluffy looking tail before it fell out in clumps. Has he been chewing at his tail or pulling hair out of his tail? If he hasn't pulled the hair out, it is possible that he is going through his puppy coat blow. Most Goldens don't get their final adult coat until later than 12 months of age. It is more like the 18 months of age to get the adult coat. The type of dog food you feed can also effect coat. Swimming and/or baths can loosen the hair that wants to fall out so that is a good thing. Your pup will probably end up with a nice tail again but you could perhaps comb it out and even up the ends. The grooming experts out there can give you their expert opinions of what could be going on.

He hasn't been pulling it out on his own and hasn't been itching or anything...once it started coming out, every time he got wet he'd lose another third of his tail fur. If this is him blowing his puppy coat, does that mean that this is most likely his permanent coat now? or that he'll get his tail back in a few months?
edit: in the picture you can see that at one year he already has clumps coming out around the top, so it had started before a year.

I seem to recall reading on here that most puppies don't get their adult coat until they're 2 years old. I wouldn't worry that it will be like that forever.
