Talking Know of any GREAT trainers in Columbus, OH area?

Getting so excited to bring a new puppy home in a few weeks! Anyone know of a great trainer in the Columbus area? I have a little dog that was pretty easy to train and can get away with some bad habits because she is so tiny, but I really want to do right with our new boy!

I highly recommend you find a good training facility... the kind where the instructors compete with their dogs. Classes are about teaching you how to communicate with your dog and is a great way to bond. Having someone else do this doesn't always bring the results you might expect. I've trained lots of dogs for people and the dogs worked well for me but unless the people understand how they communicate with their dog, the dog is not going to respond as well for you. Training is learning to be a team so for you and your dog to be a team, you must be part of the learning process. Petsmart/Petco are not worth the money, find a good class and enjoy.

I live in the Dayton area but I compete in Columbus. Google ďdog training clubs near meĒ Typically, the better trainers teach at training clubs. There are great professionals as well but they usually come at a much higher price.

Not to hijack the thread but I have a question. What is the Saturday training session like? I've always thought of going but it's about 2 hours away from me. It's a long way to go if you only get 5-10 minutes.

Saturdays are normally just run-throughs for Rally and Obedience. They set up various levels of Rally courses in one ring - they are usually harder than what you actually see at a trial - and then the other ring is for obedience practice. You can do your own thing in the Obedience ring if there aren't too many other people or you can do a real deal run through with a Karen acting as judge. It's really pretty informal. They have coffee and snacks out usually. I like it because I can work my dog in two different rings with lots of distractions. He gets a little ringwise sometimes, so it's good for me to take him to a ring where he actually gets reinforcement in the ring instead of just outside. Last weekend we did one Rally run-through and then demonstrated some of the more complicated signs for other people, then we hopped over to obedience and Pauline helped me teach him the broad jump. I'm usually there for at least 2 hours. There have days where I did 4 or 5 Rally runs and went into the obedience ring too. You only pay the $10 upfront for as many run-throughs as you want (or $5 if you're only doing Obedience). Everyone typically has the option of going through each Rally course twice.

HOWEVER, for the next several weeks, run-throughs will be on Wednesdays from 2-4 because the Sunnyside ladies will be at dog shows for the next 6 weekends or so.

The Wednesday thing is temporary until the fall dog shows are over. It will go back to Saturdays in late November/early December I think. I can’t make Wednesdays either. They are really good about posting updates to their Facebook page, if you want to see when the schedule goes back to normal.
