Catching up a little. Finley and I are still working on Novice exercises with some Open things thrown in. We have our jumps at home now, so glad! She was doing a beautiful broad jump without cutting the corner, until yesterday. Our training suggested that I start putting her favorite toy in front of, but off to the side of the jump. We're to work on her going over the jump and coming to me correctly, but every couple jumps, as she is in mid-jump, I should tell her to get her toy. In our case it's her ball. So I tried it last night for the first time, and it really threw her off. She went over on command, but right to the ball. After a few times of her doing this, and not be able to have the ball, she just didn't go over, sat there looking at me. Anyhow, eventually we got it, and she got her ball. We'll see how today goes. Dumb-bell work. The trainer has us taking baby steps here. I really want her to start retrieving it, but will hold off. We're working on "Take It", and "Hold It" while walking/ healing. Take it as I hold it away from her, so she has to take steps to get it. She did great in class with it, but needed a lot of encouragement yesterday on the "take it". On my side of things, I'm doing much better at keeping my arms at my side on the Recall. Posting a picture of us with her bringing me the dumb bell before the trainer told us to hold off. I like the picture, but can see where my arms should have been at my side . I think we will enter a Novice show in November, I get nervous just thinking about it .

Got an email from AKC inviting Brooke to enter the new AKC Obedience Classic in December. She nearly qualified for Novice, Open and Utility as she attained her Novice title with a HIT in June of 2012 and the beginning date is July 1, 2012. So she did get invited for both Open and Utility. I am actually wrestling with the idea of entering her as it would likely be our once in a lifetime opportunity - but likely will not do so. Still kind of nice to get the invite.

We got our invite for utility today. I would go, but since this is the one year I'm actually going to the Golden National and already taking several days off work, I can't take more time off just six weeks later.

I just found this section of the forum...it's really cool to see what everyones working on with their dogs. This week we had class on Wednesday night. It was kind of a final prep for our CGC next week. She really impressed me. Her heeling was spot on...full attention on me for just about the entire class. This is huge for her, as some previous weeks she would not pay any attention to me. I worked on "watch" with her and have just been trying to make training fun like play fighting after an exercise is over. She seems to enjoy this and it makes her work harder for me. Worked on hand signals, down, stand, sit, stay this week. We're doing pretty good with them so far. Went to a field this afternoon for a little bit with a long line to practice some recalls...didn't go so good...oh well it was like 90 degrees out. I don't think either one of us wanted to be out there. I'm just hoping we pass our CGC next Wednesday.

If I am in the ring and my dog NQs on an exercise, I can continue through the entire routine? I thought should Jonah mess up I would not exactly train but would go ahead and continue through?

Yes, you can continue

As long as you do not overtly start training in the ring (no leash/collar correcting, touching, being verbally threatening etc). And as long as Jonah has not fouled the ring or gone after another dog or person, left the ring (more than momentarily) and is under verbal control etc.

Most judges really like to see you succeed or at least have a good time in their ring.

And keep handling as if you are winning the class! You may think you've NQ'd but still have qualified - example: minor zoomies between exercises where your dog zooms for 20 seconds but tucks back into heel position on your cue may still be qualifying.

Returning from the OOS down and your dog is facing a different direction - I was in a trial where this happened but the dog in question never bothered another dog and the judge never saw daylight under him. He did lose a few points if I remember correctly but the handler very correctly continued her return and waited for the judge to tell her she had qualified

Decided this past week its time to start introducing drop on recalls, scent discrimination and the glove exercise. Couldn't do much of this even before my neck surgery, I was so frustrated with his tendency to bolt and run. And then my surgery which waylaid me for several months. But now since we've been working hard on the bolting, and have made considerable progress, it is time to move on. Drops are going well. Nowhere near what I want but not bad. I decided to use the old tried and true tie down method for the articles, tied down a metal for three days, he appears to be getting it so added another. Will work on that for a while and see how it goes. As far as the glove goes, he loves this exercise, and we are having fun. In fact, training the past couple weeks has been a blast. I told my instructor that its going to be a pretty long while before we are ready for the ring, at least the obedience ring, but our club is having a rally trial in the fall and I think we are going to start there. He really can't bolt if he is on a leash the whole time in novice. I am going to do some drop in classes before it and see how it goes.

We had a terrific training day so far

Brady was in rally class and is starting to 'get' heel and I now need to signal him to look ahead for jumps since he pays such close attention Of course he decided he loooooves the jump and so now forges when he sees the left hand coming down and pointing towards the jump LOL We worked on his down stay while I was walking the course - his sit stay is fairly solid but the down, not so much. Distractions with very big stuffed animals and small bobble heads etc And then since it was just him and a Sunfire relative we ended class early and Brady got to play with Bouncie some - he rarely gets to play with dogs he doesn't know but was getting that dazed look from too much concentration. we were done early and they were both trying so hard that we let them play to release their stress.

Faelan and I did utility and some sits & downs as well -he did fairly well and seemed to make the connections with distractions meaning higher attention needed - of course at one point he was kind of kicking his rear feet out on his go-outs (he bounces on go-outs and his rear end movement is adorable) and I started laughing and he sat too soon - oops. He was kind of amazed at the huge stuffed (first sitting then exchanged for floppy down) animals surrounding him for groups - his eyes were HUGE and he just could not seem to believe such things existed LOL

Casey & I went to Petco and selected a few toys and just hung around.

Then we came home and all took a nap

Oh and I recognized which dog was in the window by the unkempt looking silhouette, so reviewed my Erik Strickland DVD and trimmed both Faelan and Brady's ears and ruff. While I was at it, I trimmed feet and nails a day early too since they were on the grooming table (usually done on Sundays); Casey's ears didn't need trimming but his tail needed a bit of coming since those baby burrs are out and loving his tail.
