I will be getting my puppy in a month and plan at 12wks old to begin classes for her at Upper Suncoast Dog Training Club. They offer a puppy kindergarten class and an AKC S.T.A.R puppy class. Cost is the same for both classes. The description of what is taught in the classes are the same so I'm unsure what the difference is other than the S.T.A.R class gives you a certificate and is recorded. I plan to enroll her in many classes, i.e. basic obedience, sub-novice obedience. Thanks for your feedback.

IMO either one is likely to produce the same level of competence in you and your pup. The STAR might cost more, since they likely offer the test for a fee @ end of classes. STAR is good only for encouragement on your journey to a well-trained dog (and it sounds like you plan to do some nice classes). I've done OB trials @ that location- it's tight in there when there are a bunch of entrants and their dogs, but I imagine it will be a super place to take classes.

Thanks for the feedback. Have you been to the Dog Tranining Club of Tampa? They also offer the 2 types of puppy classes. They are both $128, about $40 more. It's about 20 miles further for me but worst than anything it would be interstate rush hour traffic. Do you know if the facility is larger?

I have a friend who goes trains at Upper Suncoast! She really enjoys it there. I think for awhile she was assisting with some of the obedience classes, but I'm not sure if she's still doing that. If you'd like, I could ask her what the difference in class material is.

Okay so my friend said:

"So the puppy class basically goes over the same things that STAR puppy does. We offer two because we have a HUGE influx of puppy people who want classes and we just lack enough AKC CGC evaluators to offer two star puppy.

The major difference is that STAR puppy allows you to take the test at the end to get a cute little certificate and ribbon from the AKC"
