I have a 14 week old golden retriever puppy. A week ago she received more vaccines and the vet gave us a sample of food. I mixed in the food about 75% old food 25% new food. That same night she was up all night with diarrhea. The next day I added more old food, but that didn’t help. Since then most of her poop is a yellowish, mucusy blob. Occasionally she will have one that is more firm. She’s been on the hills ID for two days and started probiotics today. Still the same thing. She is eating and drinking normally. She’s playful, but a tad more cuddly than normal. She’s been a lot better about telling us she needs to go out. We brought a fecal test to the vet today and should have results tomorrow. The vet doesn’t want to start antibiotics unless things get worse or the test comes back. I’m not sure if I should be pushing for more or if the vet is right and we should be taking it slow...

I can't figure out exactly from your description- how many days has the diarrhea been going on?

You could try adding a little bit (~1/2 tsp) of canned pumpkin (plain, no spices) to each of her meals. Put the extra pumpkin in a sealed mason jar and refrigerate- it will last a while. Even if she seems to be drinking normally, it might not be a bad idea to add water to her kibble in each meal just to make sure she is staying hydrated.

It started last Wednesday night, so it’s been a week today. We tried pumpkin for a few days to no avail. We stopped because we wanted to limit her diet as much as possible.
Her fecal test came back negative this morning and the vet really doesn’t think it’s Giardia. I think it still could be. We live in an apartment around other dogs and it’s not uncommon to find poop in the yard.. The vet says if there’s no progress by Friday they will start antibiotics.

My golden had on/off diarrhea for a few weeks and at one point it was about 5-6 straight days of it. My vet put him on Tylosin and had me add forti-flora to his food and it cleared up almost immediately. We slowly weened him off of the Tylosin.

My dogs also went through a period of diarrhea. My 1 year old, Bear, loves to chew on small branches that are on the ground. He also chews on mulched grass that has hardened. He’s been tested off and on and also been on Metronizadole a few times.

“Knock on wood” I’ve gotten it under control. I’ve been supervising him when he goes out to make sure he doesn’t pick up things from the ground. I think it’s pretty much a puppy thing and he has gotten better. While he was going through the diarrhea, however, I fed him boiled chicken or ground beef, (making sure to drain all the fat well) rice and Hills Prescription Diet W/D that I would get at the vet. I also sprinkled Purina Pro Plan, FortiFlora also available at the vet. I kept him on the bland diet for several days and once he had a few days of normal poop, I very gradually re-introduced his regular food, Purina Pro Plan Savor for puppies which has a probiotic in it. Good luck

She’s on day 3 of the hills ID and day 2 of the FortiFlora. I’ve seen 0 improvement. She’s acting totally normal, so I’m not that concerned, but I’m going back to work tomorrow and there’s a 4 hour gap between my boyfriends shift and mine. I’m just worried that’s going to be too long at this point. She just ate her last meal today. Is it wrong to not feed her again until 11 am tomorrow 😭 I don’t know what else to do.

Sully is 17 weeks and we have been dealing with diarrhea/soft stool on and off (more on) since he was 11 weeks. He tested negative for Giardia two weeks ago but he got retested today since we had a vet appt. He has been on Metronidazole twice and he is fine when he is on that but the day after it stops we go right back to where we were before. We did chicken and rice with pumpkin before this last round of meds but it didnt seem to help. Today the vet said to slowly start switching him over to adult food- he has seen it help puppies who just cant get rid of diarrhea/soft stool. I am in a group on facebook and I keep seeing people say that a lot of goldens have trouble with chicken. So I am trying to decide if I want to give him a food with beef or salmon. Has anyone seen any differences in those compared to chicken?

If i remember right, my girl had some runny stools off and on when she was pup tested negative for everything.

even now she gets the runs, just last week she had diarrhea Sunday, solid stools Monday then Tuesday diarrhea again, because she probably ate something weird outside, she was fine otherwise, and it went away.

Hopefully you get to the bottom of it.

i agree with PPP puppy food, my girl was just switched to PPP sensitive skin and stomach large breed adult after being on something different since she was a puppy (she will be 4 in oct) and she loves it.

Pup has been on antibiotics for about a week and the diarrhea stopped instantly. She’s acting completely normal again, but I’m so terrified it will comeback once the antibiotics are done, but so far we are in the clear
