Golden puppies are notorious little land sharks. They were bred to be hunting dogs that were suppose to retrieve game with their mouths all day. So they're mouthy. Plus they're teething when they're babies. It starts to get better around 14 weeks if I remember correctly. The usual strategies are to redirect with a toy, get up and ignore them for a little while, yelp like a puppy and say NO.

If you calmly and consistently correct the behavior, it typically just goes away one day somewhere between 14-16 weeks old. It's a phase. It goes away.

I REALLY think the land shark phase varies - I have had two golden puppies and my current pup is MUCH worse than his half-brother was. I am struggling with a 12-month-old land shark puppy, who is better at times, but he came to me at 8.5 weeks EXTREMELY mouthy. His dad is a MH and mom a SH, though, and he almost needs to carry something in his mouth to remember not to be so dang mouthy. We have tried "go get a toy," shutting his snout with our hand and saying "no," dragging rope toys...it is not completely extinguished, just better. This is more than a teething thing...first thing in the morning, he looks for his toy and carries it outside to potty with him (holding it in his mouth the entire time). He woo-woos with the toy in his mouth, too, butt and tail wagging the entire time. Kind of cute, but I'm ready for him to grow out of "forgetting" and using his mouth on us. I think he'd be better if we owned another dog to play with and I've heard that helps some (he LOVES to play mouthy with other dogs), but that's not in the cards. He's going to need to settle for doggie play-dates.

They pretty much just have to outgrow it. You just got to teach them what is appropriate to chew on when they bite. Shoving a toy in their mouth ect. Chloe was so bad. It pretty much stopped by about five months. One day we were just noticed she stopped.

This is a great video to watch raising a biting puppy. I wish I had watched it before raising my current pup, now 2 years old. Good information, teaching bite inhibition first, before stopping the mouthing.
