Don’t know what to do

Hello all. I know I post a lot about my dogs issues, I just don’t know who else to vent to! My 6 month old puppy is incontinent. When she drinks too much, she pees when she lays down. She has recurrent uti’s. As if raising a puppy isn’t a lot of work already, I have these issues to handle. I’ve been to two vets. She doesn’t have ectopic ureters. They want to wait until she goes through heat and see if that corrects it. Then we can look at sphincter issues or hormone issues. I’m so stressed by all this. I don’t even want to spay her now because I’m afraid that will make her incontinence worse. I just don’t know what to do.

I am really sorry, that sounds horrible to have to deal with. I don't have any advice just empathy.

I feel your pain, been there. My girl came with a UTI and she was 6 months old before all her health issues were resolved. Taking her out every 15/20 minutes for the 1st 4 months was exhausting. She could last about 2 hrs at night. We changed vets a couple of times but once we got the sterile culture and on the right medication... and 6 weeks on this medication, life was good. She hasn't had a problem since. But we didn't have any physical reason for the UTI, just bacteria.
I wish I had some advice and certainly hope as the puppy grows it helps with your situation. So your vet is telling you to continue the way you are until after her 1st heat cycle? Just me but don't see how spaying her now will resolve anything and they cannot do surgery if she has an infection.
Hang in there ... maybe find a pet sitter or board her with the vet and get a good nights sleep? It's amazing how a little sleep can help.

Just curious, did the breeder offer you any insight or suggestions?

I'm so sorry to hear that you guys are going through this, I've dealt with health issues myself and know how frustrating they can be. I don't have any advice--other than to say, have you considered trying doggie diapers? It may help save some of your sanity. I will say though, your pup is so lucky to have such a wonderful and attentive mama who is doing the best by her <3. I can imagine the waiting game for her to get a little older has been overwhelming. Hopefully it will only be a couple more months before she comes into season. I'm sending lots of good thoughts your way.

I think you’ve responded to my uti posts previously and I thank you for that! We did do a sterile culture and she is on a 4 week supply of antibiotics right now. I haven’t bothered with her breeder because I found this site too late and got her from a byb. They don’t want to spay her now, I was just worried about in the future whether it would do more harm than good to spay her.

Thank you for your kind words! I was thinking about diapers but wasn’t sure if that would incourage more uti’s!

I might have mentioned this before---my girl was not reliable until 10 months old. I bounced this off my friend (Sunnylaine Goldens) and she told me that this can happen when housebreaking a female, not to worry.

She does really well holding when she can. She will sit at the back door and let me know she needs to go out. If she purposely squats and pees on my floor, I know she has a uti. When she has accidents, it’s when she is laying or sitting normal. I don’t think she knows she’s peeing.

Hey I bought a dog out of the back of a pick up truck, we all learn. In fact this dog leaked too! She just dribbled and if she drank too much it was like squeezing a sponge. All I remember is the vet giving her a dark blue pill, sorry it's been decades ago and don't remember what the medication was... but it worked!
It sounds like she is really trying so you did something right with the housebreaking!
When they finally got the medication right it still took a few weeks before I could see a difference. At about the 4 week mark we were supposed to go back to do another culture but just as we were getting to the end of the medication I knew she still had a problem. They sent me 2 more weeks of meds before doing the 2nd culture.
By the time we got to through the 5th week I was shocked at how different she was. She not only stopped leaking but she had more personality. Poor thing had been sick since I got her and was just seeing who she really was & could tell she was feeling better.
Say a prayer, maybe this time you will get these little bugs killed off and all will be well. She is lucky to have you!!!
