Smile Meet Simba!

Say hello to my (well, our) little guy Simba!

Simba! 8.5 Weeks

This was the day we took him home. He's been a great little pup. He comes from a long family of champions of Field champions. Here he was just a few days ago..
Simba 9 weeks

He's done very well at potty training, although occasionally he'll forget that he's supposed to go #1 outside (once every few days). I do have a few questions for everyone though! Simba seems to have ENDLESS energy. He comes from mighty field golden lines, so I know exactly why he has the energy. My question is, how do I expel most of his energy at such a young age. At 9/10 weeks, he obviously isn't fully vaccinated. Once he's fully up on shots, (and older), we will be able to go on runs, and go to our big parks to play fetch, frisbee etc... but right now I guess we are kind of stuck. We live in a neighborhood with a lot of dogs, so I can't take him for walks yet (super paranoid about parvo), and not sure if he should be going to parks (not dog parks, wide open grade school recess parks). Anyone have any ideas? So far he knows "sit" and "down" for commands, he loves to ignore "no". The next we are working on are "shake" and "stay".

I try to run him around our yard/house, but I feel like that's barely touching his energy. He panted today after our play session outside, and I totally expected him to go down for the count once we finished. Of course, I was wrong. Some gulps of water, and a quick breather, and he was good for another hour of play. His other "big" issue is play nipping.. I'm hoping he will grow out of it, we substitute toys when he has our hands etc. but he sometimes can't be distracted by them. I've recently tried to go right into training mode once I see that happen, and that seems to work.

Oh, one more thing He can't seem to grasp the concept of Kongs. He'll play with them for a few mins, lick a little bit (yogurt, peanut butter), but he'll leave most sitting in there. I've tried to freeze them as well, but same issue.

If you have stairs, you could throw a ball up them for Simba to fetch. Just hope he doesn't get lazy like Pixie did. If he keeps chasing the ball, the stairs are a great way to expel energy.

Simba is an absolutely beautiful pup. I love his coloring. It is what we had hoped for this time, but we are going to have a lighter color golden if the parents are any indication.

Thanks! Yeah, our stairs are to the basement, and he's probably a bit to small. They aren't carpeted either, so I'm worried he'll go to fast and fall.

IMO, stairs aren't a good idea for a young puppy, bad for their hips. Some people don't even allow their puppies to do stairs at all (I'm more in the occassional-but-no-playing/running-on-the-stairs camp). Playing in the yard is a much better idea or rolling the ball down a long hall indoors.

Thanks! He's a real head turner in the neighborhood. I can't wait until he gets all his shots so he can finally meet all the dogs that walk by each day.
