My wife and I were getting things in order for a family portrait sitting this evening. While doing the usual test shots, our cat Tommy came to bug his mommy. No sooner than she put him down, she was assaulted with a drive-by licking at random. I really wish I could get Cooper used to this stuff. He hides under the bed when we start setting things up :(

Thanks Dan! I used a Canon 20D with an 85mm f/1.8 lens. I think I bought it at New Egg in the spring of 2005. It wasn't cheap, but I should also point out that this isn't natural lighting in these photos - all of them were shot with multiple flashes. In this case, the camera really doesn't make a difference as long as it has manual controls and means of firing off-camera flashes. The 20D has since been discontinued and replaced by the 30D. I think it retails around $1150. Canon's Digital Rebel series is similar to the xxD series in image quality and control, but it lacks certain features. One of those can be had between $600 and $800 with an okay lens included.

Whoa. Those are really nice photos. Did you use a reflector? The lighting seems pretty well balanced. Really good job. And is the dark background a wall or are those the professional backgrounds?

Those are really really nice portraits! How long have you been photography?

Thanks guys! Photography has been something I've dabbled in since my junior year of high school (98). I've always aspired to do more with my photography. I've shot several weddings/engagements and many family portraits. I'm trying to take off running with it this year. A little of my stuff is on Flickr. One of the big motivators for me this year is the fact I hate my soul-sucking job and I can't find anything that pays close to what I get paid. So the ultimate goal is to work towards photography full-time.

Cooper livened up at his third puppy kindergarten session this morning. He quit being afraid of things he was afraid of in the the previous sessions. There may be hope for me to get a self portrait with him yet ;) My wife and I have no intentions of having children anytime soon. For now these guys and girl are our kids and we have a ton of snapshots laying around and hopefully more to come.
