We've been watching a friend's golden for the last week and a half while their visiting family in France. She is duo to be in heat right now and they told us to watch for it, her vulva is swollen but there is no blood or discharge of any kind. She's 2 years old and has a hooded vulva, this should be her 3rd heat I talked to my friend about it and she said her heats have always been normal. Will the bleeding start soon or should I take her to the vet?
Some girls swell, some don't- a hooded or inverted vulva should have popped out by third season so maybe what you're seeing is that finally happening. I'd suggest taking a white tissue to her vulva every morning and evening looking for color of any tint and expect to see blood sooner or later if she is indeed swollen. You must be super trustworthy to leave a bitch about to come in season with!
I first noticed the swelling on Saturday evening and have been doing to tissue test since then, I just tested her again and still nothing.Guess I'll wait a few more days before taking her to the vet.
If she's having a silent heat going to the vet won't tell you that unless vet does blood progesterone test. Silent heats are pretty unusual. As long as she's not being allowed w intact boys it shouldn't matter a bit whether she is or isn't in heat. Just keep her from the boys.
I only thought of taking her to the vet in case it was something else, Tess thinks maybe a UTI would do it?
Did the tissue test again and still nothing, been keeping her kenneled and taking her for long walks on a leash.Luckily we live 5 miles from our nearest neighbor and they don't have dogs still we never let her out unless she's on a leash.Basically the same things we used to do for poor Lilly.
So there's still no blood,is it possible that her hooded vulva would have popped out without her going into heat?maybe she'll come in to heat next month.
My friend isn't going to be state side for another month and hasn't been answering her phone, neither my wife or I know what to do at this point.
I guess am too worked up about the whole thing anywise
well, imo as long as she's not around intact boys it only matters to be able to put it on the calendar as having had it start.. and hormones govern that vulva popping out if it just now is doing that from her puppyhood... I wouldn't worry about it. Either you will see blood unexplained dripped somewhere on your floor, or you will notice she's licking herself a lot and be able to wipe some color when you check her. There's really nothing to verify a season starting besides a blood progesterone level or a swab being looked @ under the microscope (but even that isn't terribly useful if she has no blood indicating she's actually in season because looking for cornified cells on a slide is timed too..
have a glass of wine and just chil-lax over it. As long as she's not w boys- nothing bad will happen.
