Strange eye movements

Hello—

I have a 1-yr old male Golden named Bantam. Both of his eyes "flutter" or "roll back" regularly throughout the day. I'm wondering if any of you have ever seen this. I am in contact with my vet about this issue, and she is going to contact a neurologist as she has never seen this type of activity.

I posted a video of this movement in his left eye—He has a cone in the pic due to hot spots on his neck—poor guy! Thanks for any help you can provide!:

Hmmm. Yeah, I would be asking about this as well. Personally, I don't have any experience with this, so the only suggestion I can offer is to have your vet check him out. I'm confident others on this site will be able to offer helpful input. Just be patient! Other replies will be coming.

Hopefully the neurologist will help you. Please have a check on ears or sinuses as well through. With inner ear infection / bacteria or fungal they tend to do sometimes strange eye movement as a sign of inner ear vestibular.
Very curious about the outcome. Kindly update us and hope it will be quick thing to get resolved

I aswell wonder if those strange eye movement started after the cone. As you know the dogs have 240 degree of field vision much larger compare to human. Maybe he really gets disturbed by having his vision field get decreased and as a relief he started to make those strange eye movement which is becoming a tic disorder.

Neurologist is a good start, but you might also go see a canine eye doctor. Can you tell if its actually his eye moving, or is it the third eyelid slipping up and down?

Wow - never seen anything like that. I would also consult a veterinary ophthamologist. Call your nearest vet school if there isn't a specialist clinic near you.

My friend watched the video twice, he said he believes it is a muscle @ the back of the eye causing the eye to roll back, didn't say much more- its not like looking @ something definitive just symptomatic (though I am sure if he'd ever seen it before he would have told me).

That does not look like the eye rolling back at all in that video. It looks like the conjunctiva (3rd eye lid) moving. Maybe some type of a spasm or it looks like there is an irritation in the eye causing it to move. His eyes look a bit watery as well. Maybe a scratch in his eye and the irritation is causing the conjunctiva to close some to lubricate it? An ophthalmologist is the ideal way to go to get your answers.

Update on Bantam's eye movements: I brought him to an ophthalmologist today, and it was nice to hear someone finally say, "Yes, I've seen that before." Anyway, she said it is most likely congenital ocular flutter. His eyes were both normal upon exam. She also videoed the movements, and showed it to a neuro colleague. They don't feel as if he needs full neuro-workup right now as he doesn't have any other symptoms. So, we will monitor him and contact them if anything changes or progresses. Thanks to everyone for your responses!: )
