Thoughts on Oxford Retrievers

Hello,

Me and my wife are looking to bring a Golden in our lives. We especially like the ones that are on the "copperie" side when it comes to color. I found a breeder that might suit our needs, Oxford Retrievers. They seem to be checking all the right marks, health guarantee, CKC registered. Has anyone had any experience with them before? We went through a really bad experience recently and would like to avoid another one.

Thank you in advance,
Constantin

Do you have registered names of the Dams/Sires? It's really hard to verify that their dogs have the health clearances they claim on their website if they do not provide registered names.

It also looks like pups are raised in a barn of some sort, so I would want to know what the breeder does in terms of socialization from an early age, or if they are handled daily, around children, receive any kind of early stimulation etc.

Thank you for the feedback! The lack of registered names seemed strange to me also; I am following up with them and asking for all the pertinent information.

First thing... OFFA does not decide what clearances are needed, GRCA does. CKC? Are they in Canada?? There is a CKC in the states but they will register anything that applies and not worth a plug nickle. They have no reg. names or numbers so no way to verify clearances.
personal opinion, I wouldn't waste time looking. They have so many dogs and it appears they raise them the same way they raise the cattle. They don't compete in any venue so no way to verify the temperament or quality of the pups. They appear to just be producing dogs for an income and have no concern on health or quality. Anyone can make a website, there is no way to know anything about the pups.

If you choose to go this route the cost should not be over $500 and GET INSURANCE!!

FWIW, good breeders don't have "american" or "english" goldens. They are all goldens :-)

Well... they are pretty dogs + it appears they are in Canada, so that may explain the CKC bit.

Would ask them about clearances.

Their website is designed to be evasive. There is no way to search pedigrees, health information, or performance records of their own dogs or their progeny.

Time to walk away from this one and don't look back.

Are you in Ontario? What are you looking for in a Golden? There are a lot of very good breeders around here - and some to avoid.

Yes, we live in Ontario, more specifically in Toronto. The main reason we want a golden is for companionship. We are in love with the breed and its temperament. So he would be a member of our family with whom we want to spend as much time humanly possible.

I am currently in contact with Moonstone Kennel and will go for a visit this weekend.

Thank you!
