Myoclonic jerks and spasms often occur as the result of calcium deficiencies which can result from various reasons. Lead, strontium, aluminum, barium, nickel, and a few other metals antagonize calcium absorption. Mercury poisoning has also been associated with neurological symptoms resulting in seizures.
