Red face A Good Pet Cam for My Boys?

Hi Fellow Golden Parents-

I've always been a worrier when it comes to leaving my boys at home when I go to work. One of my boys is a Golden Retriever-Stewie. He is going to be 10 years old in May. This adds to my anxiety of leaving them home alone. I am using a regular IP cam to monitor them now, but the quality is bad and I can't see them most of the time.

I'm really happy to see there are cameras designed specifically for pets. (some are even only for dogs) But I'm worried they are merely gimmicky products. Is anyone familiar with pet cameras/dog cameras? How do you decide if they're good for your dogs? Or is there any other alternatives?

We use a Nest cam, mostly because we already had the thermostat. It might be a little pricier than some other options, but the quality is fantastic. It gives a nice wide view that you can zoom in on and still maintain quality, and it allows you to speak through the microphone so you can tell your pup to get off the couch. Setup and use are super simple.

Like smp we use a Nest cam and we also have the thermostat. The other nice thing about the nest cam is that the talk back feature is very clear. I have used it many times when Jack and Bailey's play becomes a bit too rambunctious while I am gone (ie knocking over a lamp). It's clear enough that they seem to assume that I am in the room or some where in the house as they wiIl stop, look around and then go looking for me. Oh that ever omnipotent "mom" of theirs....

I use my alarm service....equipment (Cameras) were free, and then the service, which isnt terrible...AND, they are free standing, so when the grandkids come over, I use them in their bedrooms...its a win win situation!!!

This is great to see what other pet parents are using! We want to get a "real" system as well, for now I'm using my our old iphones, and my ipad with the Presence app.

The picture quality isn't perfect, but definitely clear enough, the viewing angle is pretty good and it's been easy to prop up the devices so I can see them pretty much anywhere in the kitchen and family room. It has a talk feature which I've only used once but love that I can hear them and if need be, talk to them.

It cracks me up to be able to hear Georgie's loud drinking! Yesterday I popped into the camera app and there was Fitzie's nose - I forgot I had set up the ipad basically right over the toy box! lol

Another vote here for Nest/Dropcam. I actually bought the DropCam Pro before they were bought by Nest a couple of years ago. Super easy to set up, excellent video quality even in the dark. Another nice option is that for a reasonable fee they will save the last 7 days of video on their server, so you can review it. That came in handy a couple of years ago when I came home to find evidence that my senior Golden had been ill while I left her for just a few minutes, turns out she'd had a seizure. I was able to rewind and capture the video to send to my vet, extremely helpful.

I have been using Petzi. The only redeeming feature it has is that it lets you shoot treats at your pet. Bagheera loves that part. He also likes when the voice of "god" speaks to him through it.

Just checked out the Nest Cam and it looked really great! The camera and audio quality are very important to me so I'd rather pay more for a good product than a mediocre one. Thanks for the recommendation!

That's so adorable! I can imagine their confusion. But it's good to know the audio quality is good enough for them to recognize their mommy's voice!

I can't stop smiling reading this. Stewie picks his favorite toys out of his toy box as well. It would be great if I could capture all the precious moments when the smallest things he does just put a big smile on my face.
