I am very confused why are they calling it a recall if they are just telling you to throw it away? Wouldn't a recall be that you should return the product for a refund or coupon for a replacement product?

I had a similar situation with the recent IAMS "recall" of the prescription diet for my cat. After calling and complaiing they finally sent me a coupon for a new bag, To tell you the truth, I'm not sure I want to go back to their product, but still it's the the principle.

If they are just telling you hey there may be salmonella contamination throw it out - then why are they calling it a recall? Why not call it a hey now I've got you sucka!? I'm really not impressed with how any of these companies are handling these contaminations. While I am certainly pleased they are being forthcoming about them, why are they so frequent and why are thye simply taking our money and saying OOPS?

Is it just me who sees this?

Why, because there is no regulations to control the safety of these products for our pets. Look what regulation need to be met for human consumption. and what needs to be met by pet food manufactures, zip, nil, nothing but their profit margin.
One of the only ways to control them is to stop buying their products with a follow up letter to them explaining why. Maybe, just maybe some of these companies will get the message when their sales drop to zero, at least they will know why.

There are regulations on dog food. It's not a totally unregulated market.

And people food, despite regulations, has frequent recalls too.

Well OK, there may be a minimum amount of regulations for the pet food industry, but how close is a lot of these regulations adhered to and policed, and unlike produces of human food, what fines or penalties are imposed onto the pet food industry if they get it wrong.
When a producer of human foods is found to be liable in allowing contaminated food to leave for sale to the public, they can and usually do get fined huge amounts and the public is notified immediately, but pet food manufacturers don't seem to be under the same guide lines and penalties, and if they are brought to the public's eye, their fines are usually very minimal...

Sure there are plenty of good pet food producers, but you gotta take a second look at some of the offering some of them produce and what they put in their food.
You need to go and see how its made and what they put in some of it when it's being made, and when you do, you'll never feed some of this stuff they call pet food to your worst enemy...
Well maybe your worst enemy, but certainly not your dog or pet... JMHO....

I'm generally with you, but I think you overestimate how regulated human food is. Liability is higher because you can't sue for wrongful death over a dog the way you can over a human, and you can't sue for enormous medical bills like you can with people. However, the regulations themselves and their enforcement are poor for both people and dog food. The food megacompanies are very powerful, and regulation is a popular place to cut in government (just listen to politicians go on and on about reducing regulation).

What pet food factories have you visited that lead you to say that we need to go too? And have you ever been in the back of a fast food joint?

dog treat recall

First of all let me tell you that I'm completely green when it comes to homemade dog treats & raw so I appreciate all your views about it. I guess it will be trial & error for me & learning what the dogs do & don't like...
