IAMS recall on all Rx foods

My vet just called - nation wide recall on all of their Rx foods - salmonella was found in one of their plants.

Coley has been on their lo-res food for about 4 weeks now. What do I do?

Correction - regional recall...........

Did the vet give you any suggestions? I would definitely request they give you some sort of alternative to this food, and either write a rx to get it somewhere or refer you to another vet to purchase it if they don't carry it. Perhaps one of the Purina or Royal Canin Rx diets can be used. I know they sell the Royal Canin Rx diets at our Petsmart.

Good luck and let us know what you find out!!

Could that have something to do with his tummy issues that he's been having??? Poor guy! Did you ask your vet what you could/should do?

Okay, so we're going to switch to Hills ID and they are ordering that now. She said mostly the scare is for sick dogs on their Rx food who are already compromised. Cole really isn't sick - it's just his intestines are sensitive right now is all. The other scare is for humans handling the food can get food poisoning from it. So, wash, wash, wash.

No, I asked her specifically, Sophie_mom about that and she said no. His issues started waaay before we put him on this food. If he were going to get sick from it it would have already happened and the issues last week & 1/2 ago was not related. She's 95% sure. No matter, though as we're switching anyway.

And, it's not the canned food - that's mfg'd in a different plant.

This must be the expansion of the Eukanuba recall posted earlier this week.

Here is the link to a nationwide recall list:
http://www.avma.org/petfoodsafety/re...10/default.asp

My guys did well on Hills ID while recovering from eating indiscretions. I hope it helps Coley as well. We used the canned formula--have some here in the pantry just in case Toby decides to grab some roadkill.

Thanks for the link DallasGold. Guess what, I have a 5lb bag of the low residue kibble that matches the UPC and falls in between the best by dates.

Rant:

When Tucker had a severe reaction to the NSAID Deramaxx that really messed up his stomach/intestines in a bad way ( about 3 months ago), I fed him home cooked for 2 weeks just to get the blood in his stools to stop. In the meantime my vet had me try both the Iams low-res kibble and Hills ID (not both at the same time). The Hills ID worked as far as his stools were concerned, but he got itchy on it and licked patches of hair of his front legs so I quit that. Tried this (now recalled) Iams low-res (IMO absolute garbage ingredients) just adding 10-15 pieces of kibble into his home cooked diet and it backfired big time, diarrhea all over again.

In defense of my vet he says he considers these prescription foods a "middle of the road" food to help a dog through the problem they are having to transition back to a regular kibble. He admits they do not have the greatest ingredients but do work. Fair enough. I am speaking of Tucker's particular problem here, I do not mean to throw a wide net over this prescription stuff or folks that are using it for their dog's particular problems. We all know every dog is different and I do not pass judgment but always feel there are options to consider.

As a matter of fact it is printed on the bag of Iams low-res kibble "this product is intended for intermittent feeding only or as directed by your veterinarian" It is like they know it is garbage. Look at the ingredients for goodness sake.

Corn Grits, Brewer's Rice, Chicken By-Product Meal, Chicken, Fish Meal, Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Brewer's Dried Yeast, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Fructooligosaccharides, Monosodium Phosphate, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate [source of Vitamin B1], Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement [source of Vitamin B2], Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [source of Vitamin B6], Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Choline Chloride, Flax Meal, DL-Methionine, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Ethoxyquin (a preservative), Rosemary Extract

Corn Grits & Brewer's Rice? that stuff is scraped up off the floor. Chicken By-Product Meal, yum, beaks and feet etc. Dried Beet Pulp (controversial ingredient) Dried Egg Product, why not use real eggs, they are charging enough for it. Ethoxyquin, Seriously? Rosemary Extract, for a seizure prone dog ( if someone happens to have one) this is a no no.

I continue to home cook for my dog has worked wonders. I know exactly what I am feeding him. I am one of many who has gotten totally sick of seeing so many recalls, not to mention the change of formulas that cause upset.

I will say that we are using some Fromm 4 star in his diet now and I am very happy with what I see, not many companies left to trust IMHO.

End of ranting, phew, this is why I usually never comment on dog food threads.

I wish you the best in getting Cole's sensitive intestinal problems under control, hope the canned ID helps. I have been one of those "poop watchers for months. I do not have to watch much anymore. Thank you for posting the recall.

An awful lot of salmanella recalls lately. I wonder if it's coming from one outsourced ingredient common to all of them?

And I'd want to know where it came from.

Yep, I'm on poop watch too but this time due 100% to Fromms Duck and Sweet Potato. Toby cannot handle it and all my wishing and hoping isn't working.

That stinks (no pun intended) our canine friends certainly tolerate xyz brand dog foods differently, even within the same brand. Tucker did not do well with the Fromm salmon a la veg for instance, he does well on the Chicken a la veg though. I don't know how he would do on the duck so sticking with the chicken for now.
