| MD school tragedy averted Perhaps I'm looking for silver linings, but this morning there was news of a potentially violent student in nearby Laurel, MD, being removed and placed in psychiatric care. His classmates reported being frightened by his comments and behavior and the authorities at the school and the police department paid attention. We may never know how many times similar stories play out across the country. If nothing else, the nightmare in Newtown, CT, has made people aware, so that those who need help are getting it and more tragedies are being averted. At least I hope so.

| I'm so glad your daughter is ok! That is the worst situation ever as a parent. I don't even want to think about it. I remember the first time my HS did a lock down. We had a drill after the Sananta high school shooting in 2001. A few weeks later, our drill was put to the test when an unknown and suspicious individual walked onto campus from the back of the school. I was never more scared in my life. My spanish teacher pulled kids in from the walkways and we were told to all sit on the ground as far from the windows as possible and to not talk. No calls, nothing. The blackout window shades were pulled down and the drapes were pulled across the windows as well. All the doors were locked. In the drill, we were told no one was allowed out until the Police came and released us. Needless to say, afterwards everyone went home. So we waited. And we waited. After an hour, the police started making the rounds. I still don't know if the stranger presented a danger to us. Better to be safe then sorry.

At times like this, I almost glad I don't have children. I don't know what I would do if my kid was at a school that received a threat. In many ways I really don't blame parents for wanting to home school. And that only hurts the kids.

| So my son came home on Tuesday telling us about this threat , we have a high school joined to the catholic high school. Anyway we just got an email today stating that there in deed was a rumour of a threat to our community on friday dec 21 but the student is not from my sons school, huh???? The student goes to the catholic school that shares the same building. Needless to say my son is staying home and I am tempted to keep my daughter too that goes to the nearby elementary school. It would break her heart though as she is looking forward to her Christmas party , even made a cake. I don't want to sound rude to any Americans on here but we live in Canada and this is something not seen here as our gun control is more stern and here we are dealing with the same issues. | Nazzers - crazy people are everywhere. If someone wants to cause harm he/she will do so no matter the means - cars, guns, Molotov Cocktails, chemicals, knifes etc. Look at the idiot in China, look at McVeigh who killed 180+ people with no gun. I will leave the comment at that as the rest that is in my head may be interpreted political. I initially planned to take my daughter out of school on Friday 12/21/12 just because of all the end of the world crazies combined with a school threat rumor. |
