I agree, and I do feel for her too. The problem is we don't understand the depth of these mental disorders. People with these issues have been known to snap unexpectedly. To have guns in your home when you know you're child has any sort of mental disorder is irresponsible. I was out of line to blame her (I was very angry) but people need to start taking these things more seriously. Mental illness is a huge issue that shouldn't be ignored.

It is time to end the nonstop coverage. But I think we will see more for at least another week, as the funerals take place. It's all overwhelming and I'm not watching a lot of it, but I appreciate that media outlet are naming the victims and memorializing each one. Even six year olds have made accomplishments and they should be held up and admired.

I think we on the outside, are trying to understand why this happened, human nature,i feel, look at all the shootings in the past, they keep happening.

People with Aspergers have been known to do this kind of thing before? I'm curious where you read that because I'm not sure that's accurate.

I work in special education law and I do think that for the people with very severe personality disorders (not like Aspergers) it is very hard to act BEFORE the child/young adult does anything serious. There are children I've seen in my work that I know, as adults, have the potential to do very horrible things. Some are diagnosed sociopaths. But unfortunately (or fortunately, however you look at it) the law does not allow imprisonment of people just because a psychologist thinks they might do something terrible down the road. I don't know what the solution is though....

We learn from history. I think we need to learn the why's and the how's so we can prevent this from happening again. Maybe there are other mothers that have children living in their homes that they know are troubled, but now they will recognize that this can happen to them too.

I don't know much about aspergers, but I heard he was autistic. I have heard that autistic children are hard to predict and can go off sometimes.

I do NOT think people with mental disorders should be imprisoned, even if they've committed a crime. That's what mental hospitals are for. I have an aunt that is bipolar, and she is the sweetest person I know, but it can get really ugly without warning. I do not believe that prison is the answer, I think that the appropriate measures need to be taken to get these children the help they need and to protect them and others. Certainly having guns and ammunition in your home is not appropriate.

I just think we have to be careful before we make statements that attempt to classify all special needs children/adults as having the potential to do what this man did. It's the same as assuming that someone who appears to be of middle eastern descent is going to bomb your plane. Not ok. And again, we don't know the circumstances of the guns in the home...perhaps he tortured his mother to get the combination to the safe? Perhaps he (like another gunman from one of these types o shootings) used a welding torch to break into the safe? We have no idea. And it's not fair to speculate.

Perhaps she did have her guns locked up, but her combination was something easily guessed, like her birthday or an anniversary.

Just a thought...
