Been With Us 2 Years Today

Two yrs go today Sept. 30, 2014 we adopted our big goof ball, Great Pyrenees goof ball, Moose. He was original found stealing food from the salad bar of an open air café on the River Walk in San Antonio, so no idea of his back ground, his rea age, or how he came to be there. My vet does concur with the rescue vet that he was about 7 when we adopted him, putting about 9 now.

He minds quite well for a Pyrenees. They are famed for being independent thinkers as they were bred to spend most of them time along guarding flocks, herds and had to think totally for themselves. In fact, their ears are often called "non functioning devices".

Moose gets a walk every morning, weather permitting. There are several different routes he and Jerry walk, ranging form jut around our short block (live on a u shaped street, so not much of a block) to ones that are about 2 miles. when they walk out the door, Jerry just lets Moose pick which route he wants to go. He usually picks one of the longer ones along the tree shaded narrow streets behind us. Now, if weather is good and he doesn't get his walk, he actually pouts.

He loges his ear rubs and tummy rugs and when he wants attention, he buts with you with his head. Ignore him and he slaps you with that huge paw of his. It is known as the Pry Paw Slap. He also expects dessert EVERY NIGHT. We do eat dessert every night and he can be sleeping in the back bedroom, yet somehow knows when I am going to dish up dessert. I think he must be a mind reader. Jerry and I each leave the slightest tad of dessert in our bowl or on the plate and Moose gets to eat what Jerry leaves, Sophie our sweet little golden girl gets to eat what I leave for her.

Moose gets along great with all dogs and people and especially loves kids. When we have him at Lowes or Tractor Supply and he sees kids, his tail goes into racing mode with wagging and he all but drags us to the kids. Two weeks ago our neighbors 3 dogs managed to push a boag out and then dig and get into our yard. She ahs an "over shize chi" (mix), and two terrier mixes. I heard them barking and knew they were in our yard. Went to the door and called Moose and he just walked right past them with them yipping and yapping at him. They might as wellhae been puffs of smoke as far as he was concerned. Yet when a pit bull tried to come thru a fence when he and Jerry were walking, he got between Jerry and the dog and let that dog know it better not get out and come at Jerry.

He loves to get a mouth full of kibble, spit it on the floor and then eat it kibble by kibble. He always manages to leave one of two and somehow one of us ends up stepping on a piece--bare footed and that is not comfortable. He also gets water all over his muzzle when drinking and then drips it all over the floor. When I rake him I get enough fur that it looks like a baby Pyr in the trash can.

We are so glad we adopted this big boy, who is now about 9, but doesn't know it.

Thanks everyone. We really love that big goof ball. He is actually only the second dog I ever owned that was not a sporting dog---going all the way back to 1956. I have had English Setters, Irish Setters and Goldn retrievers;. Before Moose we had adopted another Great Pyrenees--my first none sporting odg--but lost him after only 3 1/32 weeks to hemangiosarcoma;..

Moose is absolutely beautiful and clearly a very much loved family member. I know what you mean about the muzzle dripping after a drink of water. Our black and tan coonhound has the same problem. We keep what we refer to as "the jowl towel" next to the water bowl for Jack;)
