Check craigslist in your area and see what the going rate for pasture board is or with stall if that is going to be included.
As far as your kids getting involved, it does depend on the horses and the kids age too. When I boarded my arab years ago, the young girl there was experienced and he was quite a good boy so I didn't mind if they used him. They even took him trail riding with their horses when they had someone else come over, but I knew them well enough to trust their judgment.
When I had my tow horses here, I added a rider to my insurance for an additional million for about $140 a year and anyone who rode had to sign a 5 page waiver.
Will people abandon horses? Yep - I've known them to do it. Get a deposit if you can to cover 1 month's rent just in case.
With the current hay situation down here, I would not include that in board. It will mean you get less per month, but you jsut can't be sure how available it is and will continue to be.
I've considered allowing a boarder here in order for my horse to have a companion adn me to not have all of the responsibility, but I can't make up my mind. I don't have a lot of area and the grass I finally have growing would be gone in no time with 2 horses.
Good luck! It does sound like a way to get some exposure and time with horses without the full obligation.
