My wife Kim and I are new to the breed, we are in the process of locating and speaking with breeders in order to obtain a new puppy or young adult Golden. We just recently attended the Rose City show in Portland, met a very nice breeder with very nice dogs, and saw a really nice representation of the breed in the various classes in the ring. Some back ground. I was involved with German Shepherds for about 35 years, breeding some of the top show dogs on the West coast. I dropped out of the dog show game about 12 years ago when it became difficult to tell the males from the females. I started working with German bred dogs and would never go back to American bred shepherds. We lost out last Girl, "Xena" to cancer two days prior to Christmas last. She was our love, I can't begin to express the heartbreak we felt when we lost her. I'm a big guy, but I'm reduced to tears whenever I see her collar on the mantle. At the Portland show we both were amazed at how the expressions on the faces of many of the Goldens at the show could just melt your heart in an instant. I had always said that if I didn't have shepherds I would only have goldens. I wish I would have listened to myself many years ago. We are trying to bone up on everything "Golden" So that we make the right choices. We hope to bring home a new family member some time after November 1st. I seriously doubt that we will show, but we do have a very loving home waiting for a new "Golden" member of our family.

I made the change from German Shepherds to Golden Retrievers almost 10 years ago. I had GSD's that had issues where I could not have visitors etc. Goldens love everybody, and have the same willingness to please and love for their family that GSD's have, but they love everybody and everything too. You will not regret getting a golden, I now have 3, with a fourth one currently living with me, and possibly staying :) because he just fits in so well.

Very sorry for your loss Xena, it's always difficult when we lose a family member.

You'll find a lot of good information in the Choosing a Golden Retriever Breeder and puppy section, members will be happy to help you also.

Best of luck in your search.
