Smile Hello Golden Lovers

Hi everyone. My name is Sara and I have 2 beautiful Goldens who are almost one! They are litter mates! Two boys. We have definitely had a heck of a year with them but I wouldnt change any of it, well except the 2 surgeries. Charlie decided that he enjoyed chewing on rocks last summer. He had to have emergency surgery because of a blocked intestine and he also had another rock in his stomach. Six weeks later we went thru it again. He had a rock stuck in the exact spot in his intestines that he had the first time. The second time I caught it early and had him checked out immediately. The first time was a huge surprise. We didn't know he had swallowed the two rocks. I acted fast but if we would have let it go another 24 hours we could have lost him. We are re doing our landscaping this spring so we can let them enjoy the big fenced in backyard we have instead of hovering over them like we do now when they're outside. My Charlie boy also has a sensitive stomach. I was wondering if anyone knew of any natural treats that are good for sensitive stomachs? My Gus is pretty big too. He has about 15-20 pounds on Charlie. They eat the exact same amount and he is a lot bigger. I'm worried about him being too big and having hip problems. He already sways when he walks and it makes me nervous that he will have to eventually have a hip surgery Any comments or any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm a newer mommy so I LOVE advice! Thanks !!

Welcome to the forum. We always enjoy pictures.

Sorry to hear about the rock eating problems. Our Max is a big boy, so we keep a close eye on his food intake. He gets one Blue Buffalo Salmon Biscuit per day as his "treat." Do not know about the sensitive stomach issue, though.

Hello Sara, and welcome to GRF! Sorry to hear that you've had a bit of a rough start with Charlie. Goldens are so orally focused that it is (unfortunately) not uncommon for puppies to nosh on things they shouldn't be eating. Glad you caught it in time and he is ok. Your vet would be the best person to tell you whether Gus is becoming too heavy, and whether a change in food (or amount) is recommended. If Charlie seems not to be doing as well on your current food, he may be sensitive to one (or more) of the ingredients. Perhaps it is worth trying a different food? My boy had trouble with grains and chicken - it gave him runny stools and (abundant) horribly smelly gas. Once I eliminated both ingredients from his diet, the problem was gone. Again, you may want to consult your vet. Good luck!

P.S.: We really do love photos here.

Welcome Sara, would love to see pictures of Charlie and Gus. So sorry to read about Charlie's rock eating experiences.

My two Goldens have sensitive stomachs, they are eating Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach and doing very well on it. It's Salmon and does not contain Corn, wheat or soy but does have oatmeal and rice which is easily digested.

As for treats, Wellness has a good selection of treats-

It's always good to keep your Goldens a little leaner if you are concerned about their hips. You may want to have X-rays done on Gus's hips. I would suggest discussing all of this with your Vet.

Welcome to you and your boys! I'm sorry to hear about the surgeries. My Gunner had to have surgery because of swallowing some nylon material that got stuck. I try to keep the rocks away from him too because he throws his head back when he has them in his mouth and I'm always afraid they will get stuck or roll down his throat. I agree with everyone as far as discussing with your vet about their weight. Obviously, leaner is better. Please post some pics of them when you get some spare time....
