Hello from Missouri!

Hi! My name is Rhiannan. I'd like to introduce myself and my Miss Izzy. Izzy came to live with us in late October. We think she's around 5 months old.

My husband and I have 4 children (16,15,4,2). My 4 year old is Autistic and my 2 year old also has some delays. Honestly, neither of us were really raised with dogs and I didn't think we could handle one more being to care for.

I agreed to keep my sister's dog while she went on vacation, and found that having a dog actually relieved some stress during our most difficult times of the day. My son just responded in such a positive way and fell in love with dogs.

That started a search for a golden that we could afford. Most rescue groups wouldn't consider us. Several months later, I was sitting in a hotel room 4 hours from home and decided to check the Craigslist listings for where I was (I was bored). Someone had listed a free golden puppy (7 weeks old) that they just decided they didn't want after all.

I snagged her up and we are so happy with her! She really completes our family and is a blessing to our son.

Welcome Rhiannan & Miss Izzy

Miss Izzy is around Sheldon's age . I am happy to hear that your son responded so
well with a dog. They are a blessing and a comfort to many.
As you are new to dog parenting ,this is a wonderful place to ask questions.

Welcome to the board.

I live the Kansas City area.

I love hearing the story that when you were pet sitting, it relieved the stress in the house. I really think a house is not a home without a dog.
Goldens really are comfort dogs. The first year might get tough at times, but you can find probably all your answers on this forum.

Welcome to GRF!

We really do need photos.

Dogs really are great at connecting with kids and adults of all abilities--I'm so glad your puppy has blended well into your family.

Hello from Missouri!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome!

We appreciate any guidance we can get! Our dream is to have Izzy trained to be a service dog for Cooper. But again, just having her around helps so much.

One of our big struggles is getting Cooper dressed in the morning. He hates clothes. But Izzy wakes him up in the morning with kisses. It has changed our morning from a full blown meltdown at least 4 days per week, to 0 full blown meltdowns. They just steadily decreased over the last few months. Now she doesn't even have to be the one waking him up. He's just anxious to get up and play a game of fetch before we load up & go to school.

What we are hoping to train her to do is sleep in his bed to comfort him when he wakes in the night, as he has a sleeping disorder.

We'd also like to tether her to him in public and when he's playing in the yard to help keep him from wandering off. And we'd like to teach her to bark when we call out a designated word to let us know where they are, as he doesn't always understand to answer us.

I look forward to getting to know everyone! Thanks again!
