| Golden Baby on the Way!
Hi all,
As a few others have recently posted, I've also been lurking for a few months. We will be getting our new golden baby boy, Barley, next Tuesday, so I thought it was time to come out of the wood work and introduce myself. I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions in the days/weeks/years to come!
We do have a golden mix named Casey who was a rescue. He is 12 years old, and has a pretty typical golden personality. He's one of the most patient, loving dogs, so we're hoping Barley is going to be as great a family member as he has been.
When we got Casey, we were in college and frankly didn't know much about training. Luckily, Casey was super easy to potty train and learned a few commands such as sit, shake, lay down. He does have a few bad habits, like excessive barking if we leave. He also steals food if we leave it anywhere accessible, and he runs off if we don't always have him on a leash.
We wished we had taken the time to train him really well when he was younger, but we do plan to do this with Barley. I'd like to do therapy dog training if he has the right personality.
I've purchased two books in anticipation of his arrival: How to Raise A Puppy you can Live With, and How to Housebreak your Dog in 7 Days. Obviously, full housebreaking is going to take longer than 7 days but I thought this would be a good start to crate training, which I've never done before. We did purchase a nice crate with a divider as well.
Any suggestions or recommendations for other books would be great! I'll post pictures when we get our little guy next week! He'll be 9 weeks old.
