Hi,

First of all thank you everyone here for being such a great resource. I live in the Philadelphia area and I’m on a quest for a Golden puppy. I’ve grown up with GSDs all my life and love them but this will be the first dog I can call my own and I’m in love with this breed. I’m just looking for a companion who’s affectionate and good with guests and strangers. Not that GSDs can’t be all of these things but there is a special kind of goofy warmth I’ve seen in every Golden I’ve met and I’m addicted.

Might as well ask while introducing myself: any breeder recommendations? I’ve reached out to Harborview Goldens (kind of a hike for me but they seem to get glowing praise on this forum) as well as Sunfire Goldens.

I mainly work from home and have a fenced in yard. I jog 3-4 times a week in a nearby park but a high-drive jogging companion isn’t necessary. Health is though (of course). I’m hoping for a Golden with the temperament and trainability of a therapy dog.

Hey Doug! Welcome to the forum! Have you had a chance to check out the "stickies" at the top of the "choosing a breeder" board? Also, if you go over the Golden Retriever Club of America site you can find a lot of good info.

A puppy search is so much fun, I hope you will take your time and enjoy the project. I think starting your search with Harborview and Sunfire is a fantastic idea. If you are very open and honest with these breeders, they will have a good understanding of the kind of dog who would best fit in with life at your house. They also will know most of the good folks in your region and will probably know about other upcoming litters. They will be the kind of people who will be happy to point you in the right direction if they don't have a litter planned or one that fits your needs. I will be honest, I've never yet had a Golden person who I reached out to for information or education who wasn't friendly and informative. You're on the right track. Can't wait to hear the updates

Nolefan - I’ve been using the search function on the forum to look up threads about breeders in the PA/NJ area and it looks like there has been a lot of discussion on the subject over the years. I’ll keep panning through, researching and contacting breeders before I come back to post more specific questions here. So far everyone I’ve spoken with in this search has gone the extra mile to help!
Karen - I’m checking in with the local rescues on a semi-daily basis. I have my heart set on a puppy and I’ve been pretty stubborn about it so far. I have a friend at UPenn’s Vet Hospital on the lookout for me as well.
Looks like Sunfire expects some litters in February but doesn’t start the interview process until the dogs are born. I’m leaning towards a medium-energy dog so I might not be the right owner for their Goldens. I’ll be honest with them about what I’m looking for and see what they say. Still waiting to hear back from Harborview.
I’ll keep you updated on my search and I’m sure I’ll be back soon to ask more questions.

Welcome to the forums. Im from PA as well, about 20 mins north of Phila. We got our pup from Goldilocks Goldens in Levittown PA. I would highly recommend them.
