Hello from Lexington, KY my 15 year old Jake

Hello,

I'm John and new to the forum. About a month ago, we feared that our 15 year old boy Jake had fallen down the deck steps (only 3 steps, but what a fall for a 15 year old) - Jake was really laboring and I had to literally pick him up and carry him in and out. He has spinal arthritis and his back legs aren't what they were but his hips are fine. The spill he took must had really messed him up because he wouldn't and couldn't walk.

It was to the point, that we met with our Vet and I said my goodbyes to Jake before we left and wanted to be with him (and my wife) if we had to say goodbye. But Jake wasn't ready to say goodbye, he tried to walk in the Vets office and showed me and Missy enough for us to say "we aren't ready either". We changed his meds, put him on prednisone another muscle relaxer and then back on a synthetic called Previcox. We noticed his walking improved, his apptettite improved and now he's walking with us down the street - be it about 6 houses and back, but I was carrying him and holding him up to do his buisness a month ago.

We celebrated Jakes 15th Birthday Nov 12th and he's doing as well as we could ever hope for - Christmas is next.

Jake has been our only child - we got Jake a couple months after we were married and we never had children, but Jake.

I offer one piece of advice for those of you with puppies for the first time - your dog will be your best friend, they'll give you years of love and devotion but at times they will do small things that may annoy you. One thing Jake used to do was howl with his toy and at the most inoppurtune, now Jake can't howl and you know what, I'd give anything to hear that howl again. Your puppy will want outside and back in etc. - but they'll be a time, I'm sure that I wish he were standing at the door waiting on me. Enjoy them, love them and remember they live for us everyday!

Thanks for listening - we're so proud of Jake, his toughness and will to go on, is a lesson for me and when times get hard.

Update: Jake has just made it to 15 years and 6 months - he can still walk around the back yard, in spurts, and then he lies down and takes it easy. Every night, he may wife and I meet in the family room floor and lie under the ceiling fan and nap together - sometimes, all 3 of us spoon together in the floor. Jake's still eating well and we still have to sometimes hold him up so he can wee wee and other things - we never make a fuss and just love him through the whole process. We're going for 16 now, wish us luck!
