My daughters Golden Pup, Kenobi is 10 months old and two days ago after playing in the park with Pippin, my 5 month old he suddenly collapsed. My daughter picked him up and began carrying him but after a few steps was able to put him down and he walked home normally and drank a whole lot of water. He had had access to water all day but we chalked it up to the hot weather. Kenobi rested all day inside yesterday with the ac on.( Well he kept playing with Pippin and bringing me balls )
Tonight when it was cooler my daughter and I took Kenobi and Pippin for a walk and had only gone about a mile, she we stopped to talk with some friends and Kenobi started to collapse again. My daughter caught him and in a few seconds he was fine and walked all the way home. We called our vet at her home number and left a message , but does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Kenobi has had no health problems since my daughter brought him home at 8 weeks. She, all of us are very worried.
Please check her gums and see if they are white. You will definitely be able to tell the difference if they are white or light pink. If they are white, go to the emergency vet.
Even if they aren't white, if you do not hear from your vet, call the ER vet. I would not want to go over the holiday weekend without a vet checking her out.
I'm so sorry that Kenobi is having this problem. A Golden at 10 months definitely should not be collapsing on a short walk. I hope you are able to get him to a vet today. Please don't wait. This could be a life-threatening condition.
Thank you everyone . Our vet called last night and said that being that he is completely normal except for these two episodes, and his heart has checked out fine during all his exams to just let him rest over the weekend, and bring him on Monday, but to call right away if it happens again. His gums are pink and he is his usual self bringing tennis ball to us and playing bitey face with Pippin.
My daughter is 25, a college student who only works part time so she signed up for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance last night, the same plan I have for Pippin.
Kenobi is a "counter terrorist" and my daughter said he ate half a loaf of bread the other day. I am wondering if it could be a wheat allergy as our dogs are fed grain free.
If he were my dog I would bring him to an emergency vet, if her vet not open, and have him examined. This could be serious-I would be afraid to wait the whole weekend. Perhaps they will suggest she take him to a cardiologist.
I agree to check his gums, so you can relay that to them.
You need to bring him to a Cardiologist immediately, your regular vet only auscults the heart. He should have an ultrasound of the heart and wear a halter to check for cardiac arrhythmias. Best of luck to you, please keep us posted.
No offense to your vet, but he or she needs to refer you to a cardiologist. This is not normal and needs a work up. If you signed up for insurance after the incident it will not be covered since it is a pre-existing condition.
It wasn't possible to find a cardio vet over the weekend but we did notice Kenobi limping very slightly with his right shoulder and the vet saw it too. We won;t know until we get an X-ray but she thinks it may be a shoulder issue that caused him to collapse; like the shoulder just gives out. Kenobi shows no sign of pain and would play fetch non stop. We are a relieved because a shoulder problem seems more fixable and less life threatening than seizures or a heart problem.
