Lessons from the dog: apples are not biscuits

We simply have to get weight off Penny. Approx. 10 pounds. According to our vet, her daily kibble intake is good so we don't have to cut there. We feel we over-biscuit her. 2 large biscuits a.m. and p.m. = 4 total.

So, I cut up an apple with the idea that we'd substitute apple for a biscuit each morning and afternoon.

This morning she sat in her usual 'biscuit receiving' place. I held out a chunk of apple. The little stinker turned her nose away. I smelled it, it smells sweet and juice (Pink Lady apple, not the cheap stuff) then she reluctantly took it from me.

It now lays, untouched, on the family room rug and she's camped out in front of the pantry where the biscuits are kept. Tough love, mom; tough love, mom. Her dad will be the hero and give her her morning biscuit.

I would just replace the large biscuits with puppy sized biscuits. They don't really have a concept of the size of the treat. Then she could still have two in the morning and two at night.

Ill trade ya....Try making lunch in am for BF and having not just 2 dog staring you down whining for a piece of lunch meat but 3 cats also staring you down trying to stealthily steal the whole pack of meat. It takes about 5 minutes to make the sandwich but another 15 of giving everyone no commands and staring down the cats. I swear the cats and dogs are working together like if the cats get the bag the dogs think they will share..LOL yeah right!!!

Now at my house I have two apple trees that are ripe and dropping apples right and left. My three are tearing out of the house to snitch an apple. To the point that the pup is having some bad tummy issues. The trees are so heavy this year that the branches are actually snapping in half and the trees look awful. I've told my husband it is time for them to go and they will be on the burn pile tomorrow!

Maggie is just like Penny...carrots get chewed and mushed into the carpet...apple slices left for us to step on in the early hours...BUT, we found out at my parents' house that she WILL eat red delicious apples if she picks them from the tree herself....so, when we go house shopping, the list has grown to "large backyard with a fence for puppies to run, near the water or having a fenced pool for puppies to swim, apple trees for puppies to eat from"

LMAO!!! Poor thing!

That reminds me of Mojo. He'll grab the baby carrot out of my hand faster than he can realize it's actually healthy for him. Then he'll roll it around in his mouth a few times and spit it out. "YOU ALMOST GOT ME, MOM." Luckily Missy loves them so she'll gobble them up, brother spit on them and everything. =D

Lol, I'm glad Flora's not as smart as your dogs! I give her an apple, and she plays with it for a little while before devouring it.

However, if I'm eating a banana when I give her an apple, she begs like heck for the banana. Guess they taste better than apples to her!

That's what we do too. We only buy the Small or Medium sized milkbones and when we leave in the morning for work he sometimes only gets a half of a Medium one. They are something like 45 calories each, which is still wayyyy better than the 120 or so calories in the Large milkbones. Just by downsizing you will be saving her about 300 calories a day.

Or how does she feel about banana? Just keep in mind that fruits have lots of sugar so they must be fed in moderation as well.
