Yes, Bailey has bitten both me and my husband although she has never broken skin. I was told when I adopted her that the previous owner said she would bite. I found out later that was true. Bailey was totally untrained when I got her at 15 months old. I think that the previous owner, who was actaully her second, was trying a little to forcefully to train her. She had some major trust issues when I got her.

Luckily all of those issues are resolved now and I am confident that under normal circumstances Bailey would not bite anyone now.

I agree with you that dogs are dogs but I don't think it's irresponsible to say there is no way my dog would bite. Growling and agression are just not a part of Max's make up. He would flee and if he couldn't flee he would cower and hide. There are some dogs who just don't have that connection and I happen to strongly believe I own one of them. I don't take credit for his wonderful disposition but that's just how he is.

Copper is a shelter rescue who was turned down by the GR rescue group because the intake guy said Copper was a biter.

He had a chain embedded in his neck when they found and the guy said Copper snapped at him when he "removed" it using no sedation or pain reliever. There was no mark and I sincerely doubt Copper actually snapped at him. He has had many, many visits to the vet that were not at all pleasant and has never snapped. The vet techs yell dibs on Copper when he comes in.

He was male dog aggressive and has attacked male dogs without provocation. None were seriously hurt, but it was a behavior we had to do some serious work on. He has been at another dog's throat and I have reached down and pulled his jaws away without me ever getting even a scrape.

We have two vicious Goldens in our neighbourhood and none of the Golden doodles are friendly either. Two have to wear muzzles. None are suprising considering their owners.

I guess if you include golden doodles under goldens than I could see the numbers going up in the near future as so many of them are poorly bred.

Such an unfortunate stat for such a wonderful breed.

my lab has bitten/broken finger of our walking partner.....totally play (over stick)/totally woman's fault (you don't play with a hyper lab like a yorkie). MD is supposed to report dog injuries, he agreed not.

(oops, my golden has never bitten - but he can look nasty)

Bite yes, but not reported. A trainer hit my dog...should have stopped it..but I was not expecting that. I muzzle him every time we're at the vet, just in case. I did get annoyed with the last tech who wanted to pet him before I put the muzzle on (....why do you think I asked for it?!).

Almost any dog would bite under some set of circumstances. Lots of restraint and high pain are definitely the factors that would likely result in my dogs biting. But we avoid those scenarios and I'm not afraid to muzzle "just in case."

Wanna bet you get told that shyness and fearfulness are not correct Golden temperament?
My Max has never bitten anyone, although he's scratched me a time or two with a tooth - we play rough sometimes.

Having worked in insurance, though, I will say this - the bite statistics are as they are because Goldens are so popular and so many people own them. That said, for the same reason, so many of those dogs, and the ones that are listed as having bitten, are often poorly bred, BYB dogs with incorrect temperaments. The number of bites, though, correllates with the number of dogs, simply.
Exactly what I wanted to say.

Yesterday I was horrified to find out that a Golden Retriever bitch, poorly bred (she comes from a puppy miller), bit her owner so badly that she spent 5 days in hospital, with multiple fractures! And what is worse, she wouldn't LET GO.

I have been told she went to the vet prior to their walk, she was under stress there. But this happened during the walk, and the owner tried to caress her head.

Despite this, I strongly believe there is absolutely no excuse for what she did. Biting so badly and not letting go is extremely bad. What is worse, the vet (he actually had a major part in recommending them the puppy miller who is also a vet!) came up with absolutely stupid explanations that make no sense.

I so hate the ones who breed Goldens without caring for standard (which is very specific about temperament) and health!

Finns never bitten anyone but he's caught my hand accidently a few times when playing or trying to get the lead off me at the start of a walk never enough to break skin but I've had a few scratches. I supose if he did it to someone who doesnt know him they might think of it as biting. But I like the way he plays, I dont mind him trying to get the lead off me for the first few minutes of the walk (its kind of funny) and a few scratches dont bother me so I dont try to change him. I completly trust him with me but I cant say for sure he wouldnt bite someone if they hurt him.
