I am new to this group and a new fur-mommy to a Golden named Bailey! =D Except, I am not sure she is a purebred Golden as the previous owners 'breeders' told me she is.
They gave me her ACA papers, showed me her 'Parents' etc.. but I am still not convinced! But before I go on, let me confirm it doesn't really matter because I love and adore her no matter what =D I would just like to 'know' so that if later on down the road if she has pups with a male Golden, I can honestly say that her pups are purebred.
They claim Bailey was born on 2/28/17 and is a purebred Golden. I am new to this but she seems not so fluffy, and kind of 'lean' to be a purebred Golden to me. She does show some signs of 'longer' hairs coming in but she seems too tall and skinny to me.. I almost don't even believe she was born 2/28/17, because she seems to look a bit older than that.
Have any of you experienced this with your puppies?
Where are you located? Not sure what "ACA papers" are. Here in the US, you would expect a purebred Golden to have AKC (American Kennel Club) registration papers.
Her head looks Golden but even though I can't see much of it, her body doesn't look to me like the proper structure of a 3 month old Golden. It would be helpful if you could post additional pictures including side view when standing.
There's a lot that goes into proper breeding, obtaining the 4 required health clearances, hips, elbows, heart and eyes, making sure your girl meets the breed standard, considering the health of the dogs in her pedigree, and choosing an appropriate mate who has been just as carefully evaluated. Please don't just breed your girl without making sure she's a proper candidate for breeding. There is much information on this site to help you start informing yourself. The site of the Golden Retriever Club of America, www.grca.org is another good place to find info.
I have puppies born 2.23- and she looks considerably older than the two I have here next to me. Mine are well-bred, and your girl is cute but does not look well-bred and since her registry is ACA- which is not a reliable registry, I would not trust her pedigree. ACA only requires the the animal to look like a breed to register it as that breed. You can see I'm sure that this is not a good breeding candidate- there are enough Goldens out there that don't have any pedigree/depth of health clearances behind them so don't add to those numbers! Just enjoy her company and if you want to start breeding Goldens, take the time to learn about pedigrees, clearances, and start yourself with either the best boy you can afford- even if he's on limited registrati0n- and learn about titles through him, make contacts through competing with him, and someone would be more likely to trust you with a nice girl to make your foundation, or buy the best girl you can get even if (like above) she is on limited and you have to title and get clearances before the breeder changes it to full. But it will never be an easy thing to do a good job breeding dogs- and rarely do you end up with a big pile of cash at the end when the litter goes home....
Probably a purebred, but not well-bred. Please do not breed her. That is best led to the professionals. If you do decide to breed, please only do so if her temperament is sound (a Golden standard) and she has passed all genetic health tests (after the age of two). Also, same goes for a male. She is cute; have fun with her!
Thanks so much for your feedback, it is very helpful!
I can say her temperament is very much of a Golden. I have two younger (under the age of 5) and even as 'playful' puppy, she is great with them. She doesn't nip, jump, responds well to 'no' and is very lovable.
I am in Florida and am aware that ACA and AKC are different. She came with ACA, but again as first time pup mom, I didn't realize one was better than the other.
My reason for buying her was not to breed, although, it would have definitely been a plus. She will be loved either way and I will now know better and more what to look for on my next purchase.
On a side note, does anyone know if there is place to 'report' bad 'breeding' practices? I can honestly say I was taken advantage of and would hate for any puppies, dogs, or other people suffer because of their scheme. I am taking her to Vet this week and just pray she is healthy! She did come with vaccination paper work, etc but I believe nothing anymore from these people.
Unfortunately there isn't really a way to report- one of the best ways imo is to name her /kennel name and real name on this site, along w her city and state- so that when the next person comes along and googles her, the thread will come up.
You could also post on 'rip off report' for the same reason- they aren't going to do anything to her. Being in FL- did she come w a state health certificate? That is a resource for you if not- because it is state law that all puppies must come w one that attests to DOB, shots given, parasites, etc... and that certificate is only good for 30 days. So you could report to the state veterinarian if she did not have one.
I hope she is healthy too- let us know- and do post more pics if you can of her side/front views standing- her front, particularly her left elbow looks off to me, even for the position.
I hope too that you aren't hurt most of us didn't see her as a well-bred puppy---she could turn out to be a super companion but in reproduction you really only want to breed the animals who fit the breed standard and have a depth of health clearances behind them. Goldens have many health issues and you can hedge your bet by only buying puppies whose pedigree has generations of health clearanced (OFA not the vet) and correct conformation behind them.
A curious ?????? Did she come from the Tampa/St Pete area? About a year ago someone brought a puppy by for me to look at that they'd gotten there, I no longer remember the breeder's name but he did not look like a Golden, and he too had non-AKC
registration. They were so upset, these folks, their vet told them he didn't look like a Golden but a mix, and that got them looking for a breeder to look at him and verify the vet's opinion. Unfortunately (they kept me up for about a month by email) they tried to get their money back and the breeder told them the time for that was up 48 hours ..
It's not that AKC and ACA compare as one better than the other- ACA is not a real registry. Someone created it and took money for registrations, and flea markets were the first place I started seeing ACA dogs- they do not keep stud books, just require a photo to register a dog as a breed. You could send her photo to them and tell them she is a Lab and they would give you a Lab registration. Maybe even a Toller- anything she looks remotely like.
She looks purebred to me. And by that, I don't see outright signs that she has something else mixed in. That's a golden head/face. The naked little puppy body is what you see after 12-14 weeks with some pups out there who blow all the fluff. She looks between 3.5 and 4 months, so I'm not sure if I'm overly suspicious of the birthdate?
I guess the main point is that if you don't get a puppy with AKC registration from a good breeder, it's all pretty much a gamble. Unless you select a breeder who is very deliberately picking and choosing what they breed and breed to... you don't really have a lot of choice in how the pups turn out.
One of my rescues was also an ACA dog which stands for American Canine Association. ACA's main purpose is to register puppy mill pups to pet stores and con owners into thinking they have something special, ie; a registered dog. Legitimate and upstanding breeders would never have their pups brokered and sold at pet stores. My girl came from one of the worst puppy mills in Missouri and sold at a local pet store where the previous family purchased her and her brother before deciding they didn't want "her" any longer. When she was turned over to me, I asked for all her paperwork and that's when I found out she was registered thru the ACA. I love this dog to the moon and back just as you will with your pup. She doesn't have the bone structure or coat of my breeder bred girl as she's taller, leaner and less coat but again, it doesn't bother me. I got her a PAL thru the AKC so I can do competition obedience and agility with her. Love her for who she is and give her a great life - that's what it's all about.
