My mum thought it would be a good idea today to introduce Axel to my brothers staffy cross american staffy Oakley. My mum said to keep Axel in my arms and in a way I'm glad I did cause Oakley grabbed Axel's back end and started pulling him, My brother manged to get Oakley to let go, Thank god there was no bad damage done. Axel is a little sore and bruised but is ok. For a adult dog to do this to a 11 week old puppy isn't a good thing, So Axel and Oakley will be kept sperated at all times. I just hope it hasn't made Axel hate all dogs he meets.

His not in puppy classes. His final vaccination is due when he is 16 weeks old, so still has 5 weeks to wait. He will be going to obedience once his had his final shots, His still great with Missy the whippet and Shelley my female golden retriever. In saying that Shelley hates my brothers dog Oakley she will not go near him when they let him out of his pen.

I am sorry to hear this had to happen to your fur baby. I do think that since he is not scared of your other two dogs, and will be in puppy classes soon, he will be just fine.

One of the ladies on my Great Pyrenees forum had her pyr attacked by a pit bull recently. Pyrs were bred to take on anything that goes after their flocks or herd and they have a very large around of skin and fat and extremely thick fur around their throat. That pit bull grabbed Lance by the throat, but mostly got mouth full of full. Lance had very little damage and she said never again would she complain about the amount of skin, fat (?) and thick fur around his throat. Bthe way, they will take on mountain lions and even bears, so need this protection.

I'm very sorry this happened to your puppy. If he were mine, I'd be getting him checked out by a vet, especially as he seems sore. Puppies this age are fragile; their structure is still "soft" and it's easy to damage them. Depending on how hard and which bits of him were pulled, there could be some underlying damage that needs attention. Better safe than sorry in these situations.

I agree with other posters that this sounds like a dog that shouldn't be around other dogs in general and puppies in particular.

Good luck, hope things are ok with Axel.

Poor Axel, and you!

Just for future reference, unless you know if the dog is good around puppies, I would keep Axel away, especially at his young age. Alot of older dogs don't seem to tolerate young puppies too well, and depending on energy level as well. Also, if you're going to be around other dogs, it's not too good of an idea to carry Axel around if the other dog or dogs are off leash. From my experience, I noticed dogs tend to like to jump or try to sniff whatever dog is in whoever's arms.

And I second what ceegee said, if you feel he's still in pain and looks bruised, I'd go pay the vet a visit. Better safe than sorry.

Axel won't be scarred for life, you can definitely reverse that bad memory by socializing him in more puppy appropriate environments and with dogs that are friendlier. In the future when Axel gets older, he may remember your brother's dog, but to be honest, I'm not sure I would risk it if I were in your position. It's one thing for an older dog to "tell off" a puppy, it's another for a dog to attack a puppy.

Also as cubbysan mentioned, this is a behavior that shouldn't be ignored by your brother. It should be addressed appropriately, as a dog attacking a puppy is not considered normal behavior by any dog.

Thank you everyone. It was very scary when it happened, I was very angry aswell. My brother doesn't do any training etc with Oakley, doesn't take him for walks. He is locked up in a pen all day as all he does is cock his leg on everything and destroys everything. When they let him out for a run I have to pick up my dog toys as Oakley destroys them. Oakley is very hypo his about 5 years old and still can't settle down. His also still entire aswell which probably doesn't help. From now on I don't trust Oakley and Axel will not be interacting with him at all, When Oakley gets let out Axel will be coming inside, even when his a adult. Axel is doing great his been runing around and playing with my other dogs.

Oh dear, I didn't realise from your first post that both dogs live in the same house. That's a bit worrying. Your brother really needs to work on training the dog. It will be next to impossible to keep them away from each other for their whole lives.

Everyone in your family needs to understand that these breeds were designed to latch on when they attack and not let go...so if he gets hold of your puppy, it could be fatal.

I feel bad for him, actually...no exercise, intact, ignored...he's a statistic waiting to happen. Sorry to be so negative, but I used to see this at the shelter all the time. Young men get these macho breeds and then do nothing with them...then the dog menaces or bites someone (usually a family member or friend) and they want the shelter to take them.

Any chance your brother can be persuaded to give him to a rescue?

I didn't realize from your first post that the dogs live in the same house either. If Oakley is basically neglected then the best option would be to have the dog be rehomed through a rescue. It's not fair for it to be locked in pretty much all day and your brother doesn't take properly exercise or train him.

Until then, please do your best to keep them separated.

This is a tragedy waiting to happen. I'm sorry but there is no mincing words here. The dog is hyper because he is frustrated. That's an intelligent breed which is very family oriented and is made to love for five years in a pen. People go crazy like that. So no surprise that a dog would too.

There are some difficult decisions ahead I'm afraid. Someone needs to be rehomed and I'm afraid it will be the staffy. Sadly the odds are not good for him.

This is a very irresponsible manner in which to raise any dog, much less an intense breed.
