Looking at Breeders

I'm new to the forum…I just lost my 9 year old Golden to cancer, unexpectedly. She was the 4th Golden I've lost to cancer at a young age. So sad and so hard to go through! I'm starting to look at breeders and am determined to find one that breeds for health, longevity, and temperament. Two that I've heard good things about are Kyon Kennels and Dreamkeeper Goldens, both in Canada. Does anyone have any thoughts or information on those two breeders, or any others that have long-living, healthy dogs? Thanks so much!

I think you'd be fine with Kyon and the only thing that seems a shame on Dreamkeeper is that they do OVC clearances, and OVC isn't evaluating hips anymore. Plus OVC didn't grade hips that were passing, so you don't really know if they are fair or excellent- just that they passed their eval. One of the litters had an elbow clearance that seemed like it was saying it was not passing but I have never seen elbows designated as 0/1 (I'm guessing that means one elbow didn't pass but I didn't go look on litter #2's dam's OFA page).

Although my Justice didn't come from Kyon, he is a Kyon descendant. He is a wonderfully smart little boy at 7 months (smarter than me by far. :D)

As he had a Kyon dog in his lineage, I looked quite a bit at their dogs info. They appear to be quite a nice kennel...take that for what it's worth as I'm no expert!

Good luck with your search. We lost our 7 year old female, Liberty in May to hemangiosarcoma. Our male, Artemis now has multiple myeloma and is getting chemo treatments. It's tough finding puppies (or at least the waiting is tough) but we'll worth it!

I am responding very late to a posting but two weeks ago I drove from Northern Va to Mono, Ontario to pick up a Kyon pup. "Charley" is our third Kyon golden but this was the first time I had visited the property. It is a terrific facility - there are 100 acres to explore including ponds and trails - and the dogs they produce are wonderful.

We lost our first Kyon dog, Schooner, at just 11 due to multiple myeloma. Heartbreaking but we know it is rare and know also that Kyon has a fine record of longevity of their dogs. We have a two-year old female (Lulu) and now 10-week-old Charley. He's a spunky pup and a beautiful dog.

I can't say enough good things about Kyon.
