The non-AKC Goldens at my local pet store were $1800 the last time I checked. The little signs next to the display cages say "CKC Registered," but it's the Continental Kennel Club, which will register pretty much any dog with a pulse. They also say what town the dog was bred in, as if it came from a reputable breeder, but I looked up the towns and they're clearly factory farms, not residences.

The Goldens are relatively cheap there at $1800. The fad mixes (yorkiepooplexes or whatever) run over $2000.

On a side note, I have never and will never purchase anything at that store. I just went in once to check out how they were selling puppies and what they were asking for them.

Assuming it's the same with CKC registration.... over here registration papers are not a sign of quality, and price isn't always based on whether the dog has papers or not.

How is your search going? If you are still in the process and trying to look around, you might want to post a thread asking for reputable breeder recs in Ontario. I believe there should be plenty of good ideas for you.

I would start here:
Conquerer ~ Golden Retriever Breeder Ontario ~ Golden Retriever Puppies

The reputable breeders will be competing with their dogs in some venue and will pretty much all know each other. If they don't have a litter planned or one that seems suitable for your needs, they will know someone who does and point you in the right direction. They are not in competition with each other over puppy sales .

The lady I got my boys from used to sell to breeders but decided she just wanted to sell to families and dropped her price in 1/2. I have no idea what all of this stuff means, and it just doesn't really matter to me. I wanted GR's for family pets so didn't want to pay upwards of $2500....here is Cooper and Casey's fathers pedigree info from K9data...

Sorry - I didn't make clear that I knew that. I also know that the Continental has been enjoined from advertising itself as "CKC," though that doesn't stop the pet store from putting it on the sign. I was more commenting on the cost of pet store puppies vs. properly bred ones and also on the idea that AKC/CandianKC registration is a step up but still doesn't tell you too much about the breeding practices involved.

In Toronto pet stores aren't allowed to sell any cats ord dogs unless they have come from authorized shelters or rescues. As have many Ontario cities

I just want to shout out to Rob from Conquerer Golden's, he sent me an email with some fantastic advice about this process. I have heard many great things about his pups and his involvement in with Goldens. Currently he is not planning to breed until this fall, we are hoping to bring a puppy home this spring summer, but if that timing doesn't work out, he is defiantly on our short list for next year .
