A friend is traveling from Ontario to Florida with her 2 goldendoodles in late February. Does anyone know what the requirements are to bring a pet dog across the border? Thanks

I work for CBSA as a frontline officer. You need to have proof of vaccination (up to date) for rabies for dogs older than 6 months of age. Other than that there are no other requirements for dogs going to mainland USA and Canada.

Thank you. I did find a reference saying that dog food must be in an unopened package showing it was made in USA or Canada, and cannot contain lamb. I believe her dogs are on Nutro Ultra, which has chicken, lamb and salmon in it.

If it were me, I would either buy a small bag before I left home, just in case they make her throw it out, which I highly doubt or buy some when I get into the States.

We went the other way with our dog, into Canada then back into the US and were never asked about dog food. We had taken her to Canada twice and were never asked about shots either.

I live on the Maine/NB border and from my experience dogs pass with few questioned asked in either direction. Of course it is always best to have your paperwork in order just in case.

I came across the border in early December with an 11 week old puppy. I presented the puppies medical records and they asked me for documentation of her rabies shot. Fortunately, the vet in Canada also prepared a letter saying the pup was too young for a rabies shot. I'm not sure how it would have otherwise resolved but I suspect it would have been fine.

Dog food going into Canada needs to be in its original packaging and enough to sustain the dog for its trip as per CFIA. Truth be told, if either side is paying attention to a dog and dog food they need to re-evaluate exactly what they are doing / looking for. I'm busy enough with criminals let alone hasseling dog owners.

If the animal is a a puppy under six months it DOES NOT need to have proof of rabies.

Yes, when my girls have shown in Canada, when they cross the border, their,food was confiscated when not in original containers.
