Book suggestions

Hello everyone, I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but here's to hoping! I was wondering if anyone had any book recommendations about either golden retrievers, dogs and kids, or just puppy training books you think are a must read. Especially books for a first time puppy's owner lol! Thanks

Welcome to the forum My family is hoping to get a golden retriever this spring/summer and I have been reading Before and After getting your Puppy by Ian Dunbar. Seems to make a lot of sense.

Best of Luck

Our breeder makes all of her puppy buyer purchase a copy of this book. I have a copy, it is easy to read, fairly "middle of the road" in nature, and it covers from puppyhood to seniors. I used it a lot when my old girl was in her senior years.

Reading is good, real good. But another aspect to raising a puppy is obedience training. Thats because puppies and dogs are social animals and an obedience class is social arena.
You will learn from the trainer and your puppy will learn from you and the other puppies.

Books are good too because you can pick up a book anytime of the day.

Jimla- thank you, anything with the word idiot or dummie in it is perfect for me considering I have no experience with goldens and haven't had a puppy in twelve years lol! And Door I agree but since I won't have a puppy for another year and a half, books will have to do in the meantime! When the time comes, I will be the first one to sign up for obedience classes lol I'm under no illusions I need all the professional guidance I can get!

I personally read and recommend this book:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Raising-Puppy-Revised-Edition/dp/0316083275/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357067241&sr=8-1&keywords=new+skeet+monks
It's centered around German Shepherds, but the concepts are the same. I like how it describes the various phases that a puppy will go through, and how to deal with it all.

I liked "Goldens for Dummies" the best. I went through the entire puppy class before I even brought Jordan home. That helped the most!!

For reading pleasure about dogs, both good light reads about a dog's life.

http://www.amazon.com/Dogs-Purpose-W-Bruce-Cameron/dp/0765330342
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0765330539/

For reference, I always have a copy of this book.

http://www.amazon.com/Dog-Owners-Home-Veterinary-Handbook/dp/0470067853

Once you have a "gotcha" date for your puppy, the obedience classes in our area, allows you to observe the puppy classes prior to bring your puppy home.
