Found A Golden

Our youngest son and his 9 year old daughter are moving from their apartment in Corpus to a house in Aransas Pass, just 5 miles down the road from us. Jerry and I spent Saturday helping him finish his packing, and then yesterday helping him move (natch Jerry drove the rental truck). It took us to trips and we finished unloading about 10:30 last night.

Maddie is with her Mom for the weekend, so Randy decided rather than set beds up so late last night he would just sleep here. We left the house and was coming back down the country road and ther coming at his in the middle of the little road was a golden retriever. Randy stopped and got out and the dog came right to him, went over on it's back---and peeded. In the head lights it was clear the dog was very well cared for. His coat was beautiful and just starting to really father and get his "mane". Teeth perarly white, gums nice and pink, and as gentle as a spring breeze. AND NO COLLAR.

There was a house just down a little way that had a lot of cars and we got the dog in the car and just drove down there and the party (Dallas Cowboy game football party) was breaking up. The guy that owns the house says he knows everyone that lives with 3 miles (not that many houses) and none of the them own a golden.

SO, we brought him home with us. He is well leash trained, didn't pull at all (put a collar on him with leash to bring him in. He came right to the door and he had to investigate stuff in the house and same when we put him outside. We did not intorduce him to Honey--she has been an attack magnet and been attcked buy several dogs over the years and she is scared of strange dogs.

We put down blanket on the patio for him, but it was suppose to rain, so we decided to bring him in. Put Honey in the bedroom with Randy and put the other golden in our room. He did not attempt to get on the bed, he slept peacefully on the floor all night, did no "business" in the house and is the calmest dog. My heart breaks becasue he not only looks like my Hunter, gone for 9 years and 2 1/2 months--but is as laid back as Hunter was. He is so gentle and clam and liad back, so much like Hunter.

Yet, funny thing he does something I hae only ever seen one dog, my golden boy Buck, do. When he drinks he shoves his muzzle down in the the water and comes up we to his eyes. Buck did that and I finally resorted to making him drink outside as he would get water all over everything.

I called my vet first thing this morning and told them I would be bringing him to check for micro chip when hubby and son gets back from Corpus (returning the rental truck and cleaning Randy's apartment. I had planned on doing that but decided to stay home to wach the dogs. I will call the vets in the surrounding towns to see if anyone has report losing their golden. We will probably put up signs, but are just going to report FOUND LARGE LOST DOG ON 4TH AVE 12-39-12, CALL (OUR NUMER) AND ANSWER QUESTIONS TO CLAIM.. We think if we listed a golden anyone my try to claim him, but anyone missing a golden would be sure to check it out. Gonna as sex, neutered or not (he is not), and approximate age (I think between 1 and 1 1/2). And of course name and see if he responds to that. Not just anyone is going to get their hands on this dog.

I know his owners are worried sick. They'll be glad he ended up with someone taking such good care of him. Maybe it won't take long to find them.

He knew which car to stop. I hope you find his owner and give them a good tongue lashing for letting him run off without id.

I'm so glad you found him - and I think your plan is a good one. Poor guy. He must have been so scared out there on the road last night. Hopefully he was accidentally parted from his people - I hope he wasn't dumped.

I think a lot of times when dogs get lost, it is usually when their owners are visitting from out of town.

Did you check Craig's List? Or perhaps even place an FOUND ad there.

Hope he can be reunited with his family, at least he found a golden lover to take care of him in the meantime.

Contact your local Golden Ret. rescue group and the local Shelter. That's where I'd go first if I lost a dog.

Of course, Ben is 'chipped and has a bunch of tags that tell who he is and where he belongs (ID tag, rabies tag, dog license tag, & microchip tag), so hopefully that will never be an issue.

The nearest golden resuce is in Austin, 200 miles away. It is one of the 3 golden rescues I donate to regularly. I tried calling the vets in the two nearest towns and neither was open today. My vet is and we are taking him in to check to seeifhe is known there or is micro chipped. My Honey also has ID tag, rabies tag, and city dog tag.

He is so lucky that you found him. I hope, whatever is best for him, that things work out. Who knows maybe you have a new family member.
