I agree about the body language thing. Also, I would imagine a true burglar would have all sorts of adrenaline/sweat going and be all "hyped" up and aroused, which I bet the dogs could smell. On the whole though, I just thought it was so funny when the people were so surprised that their dogs didn't do anything and especially when they were doing tricks and the one that let herself be picked up and carried away. So silly!

My two GSD's and Great Pyrenees did save us once.

The GSD that was the bravest, was only one year old at the time, maybe younger and we had just rescued her the week before.

I remember this day so clearly, my husband had his work van parked in from of the house, cutting some tile for our kitchen floor. I was 9 months pregnant, watching out the front door. A car with teenagers sped down my street very fast. About a half hour went by and they drove by again, so my husband screamed "Slow down!" Next thing you know, they squealed their brakes, backed up, and asked my husband what he said, so he said "I told you to slow down."

Two of them got out of the car, and started chasing my husband with a knife. My husband was able to get back into the house, just as one of the kids was ripping the screen of our screen door and gashing our wooden door. Meanwhile, I am in the front room, with my windows on the farmer's porch wide open. The kid comes to the window with the knife, I grab two of my dogs one GSD and one Pyr who were going ballistic ( like an idiot, because I don't want them gettting hurt ), the new rescued GSD goes right to the window baring her teeth. The kid sees Nikki right there, and sees the two other dogs about ten feet behind her, puts down his arm and goes running back to his truck and runs away.

Luckily, many neighbors saw this happen, and somebody took the description and the cops found them. There were many warrants for that kids arrest.

I always felt safe with those three dogs.

We will in the sticks so to speak so if anyone comes to the door Boots and Sparkles go nuts, if we are outside Sparkles who is the biggest baby will still sorta charge them barking and growling, at the same time her head is down and apologenic with a waggy tail. She always looks back at me waiting for me to tell her Ok. She would not really do anything but she acts big and scary unless you notice her body language lol
Boots on the other hand I have no doubt would protect me, not sure of the house but one of us you bet. Tink is just friendly all the way at this point. She barks if they do but its with a look of is this a new game?

I'm pretty sure my dogs would do nothing. My little Pucci would be the one being picked up and taken away!!!

Reece does bark and charge at the door but once the door opens shes like "Heeeeeey!!"

Bear is very well socialized and is very friendly when outside, but when strangers come to our door (very rare! Aside from Halloween this weekend was the first time we got a knock on the door) he went into defensive mode. His hackles went up and he was half crouching half jogging between my husband at the door and myself on the couch. I'm 100% positive if the stranger had attempted to enter our home, Bear would have stopped him.

I do think it depends on body language. And if the owners are home or not. Bear is very protective of me. He'll even grumble if my DH and I have an argument. He's my little shadow.

Both of my dogs haven't learned yet not to bark at the doorbell, so they can sound frightening when people knock or ring the bell. As soon as you're in the house though they just want love. So I'm protected as long as burglars are scared off by the barking!

I agree with the general consensus though, and I'm sure my dogs would be very protective if I was in the house.

Even if Cassie were to have free roam of the house, I think if anything, she would just annoy the burglar with her jumping and insistence for attention. And yes, she too would sell out the family fortune for a belly rub.
