Yes one of the vets in the practice I have visited for 15 years has suggested I breed my girl to a poodle. She told me my girl was so absolutely beautiful that she would produce such wonderful looking goldendoodles.

As she said this I stood there trying to keep my smile on and figure out how to change the subject without being rude. This vet is a wonderful person by the way and I like her very much. Plus her partner in the practice breeds goldens and is active in the golden club. I imagine her partner would be horrified to hear what she had to say.

Next she told me if I produced any goldendoodles she would be the first in line to buy one. So I guess there is a market should I produce those pups!

I'm stumped on what to do. I like the vet, I really do, but gosh what do I say if she brings it up again? I like all the vets in the practice, there are 3. So avoiding her might be tough on a day I need to get in and the others are busy.

Just a simple thanks, but no thanks should do.

Totally agree! Just try your best not to have that "I think you've lost your mind" look on your face. lol

If you are a member of the GRCA, you can use them as a polite way out. Let her know that as a member you support the position of the breed club designed to safeguard the Golden Retriever by not cross breeding. If you want additional support you could point her to this letter/link.

Huh...I would simply tell her that I don't breed, but if I did - I certainly wouldn't breed mutts.

I'm just playing the Devils advocate here. If people like the cross breed and love their golden doodles is that so bad? I can understand not wanting to breed them if you are true to the breed. But is it okay for others to?

I truly don't know the answer. I'm just courious because I have friends that have them and love them.

Both your reputable poodle breeders and reputable golden breeders condemn the practice of deliberately producing designer mutts. Especially since they themselves work so hard to produce dogs who are TRUE to the breed standard and will produce dogs that adhere to that standard. Breeding mutts goes against everything they themselves have spent so much time and money on. That's selecting puppies, raising them, showing them, etc. The majority of the breeders who produce these mutts are not keeping careful records or breeding according to what is required as far as making it an actual "breed" that would fall under the foundation breed category like with the AKC.

I think you have to have 3-5 generations of goldendoodles (goldendoodles bred to goldendoodles to produce goldendoodles). And then the dogs produced from these generations of golden doodles need to predictably produce dogs that conform to a visible standard.

Most of your mutt breeders who produce goldendoodles insist on only selecting poodles to breed to goldens to produce mutt puppies to sell. There is no intention of following through and making it a legitimate breed that can exist without continuously breeding goldens to poodles for each litter.

That's how I understand it?

They are nice mutts.

But then so are a lot of other mutts that you can adopt from shelters. The poodle is the glorified mutt-producing breed, since everyone breeds everything to poodles. And sometimes with these breeders, you have people who aren't even trying to get nice temperaments or abilities true to both breeds.

Poodles can be high strung and snappy...
