Recently had golden spayed, need help

Hello! This is my first post, so I apologize if this is in the wrong spot. I have a wonderful golden named Lily who is now 4 years old. I know, we are late to the game, but I just had her spayed on monday. Doc said that the surgery went great. She was obviously upset the first night and seemed alot better yesterday and today. She has had some pink skin, but not much and the vet did say that was to be expected.

I have a question, its too late to call the vet and since she is eating and doesn't show obvious signs of pain it doesn't seem to justify an emergency call. To put it plain and simple she has a *fishy* smell. She smells just like she were in heat. I have sniffed her incision site and that does not smell, so I believe it is coming from her back end, but it is pretty bad. This is the first dog I have had spayed so I don't have anything to compare it too. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

Julie

Can you take her temperature and let us know what it is?

Is it coming from her butt? From what I understand it's normal for the anal glands to periodically secrete its fluids and that is what you are smelling. It has a terrible fishy smell and it happens to Molly too.

It does appear that it is coming from her behind. This isn't a problem she has had before. Could it be she isn't cleaning herself because of the surgery like she normally does?

The fishy smell may be from her anal glands. No emergency, but you could take her and have her anal glands expressed. If she has stitches that will need to be removed in a week or so, you can wait and ask them to do her anal glands then.

You take a dogs temp rectally, a digital thermometer is good. Normal temperature for a dog is around 101. You'll want to buy a new thermometer for your human family!

I don't know how to take a dogs temp, but I know it's done anally. If you search online and on here, I think you'll find directions.

I'm betting the smell is from her anal glands, and will go away after a few days of being back on her normal routine. If not, adding a bit of pumpkin to her food will help. But it wouldn't hurt to ask your vet, especially if she has a fever.

Welcome to GRF! Hope you stick around and show us a pic of your pup.
