Its best to do it right away, however if the dog has been kept "cool" you can still do it as the body wont start to "change". Any longer it may not get accurate answers. Not sure what they or you have decided or did with him but if he is still in their possesion I would ask if its possible. Just opening him up and looking probably wont be terribly expensive?? Depends on your vet of course, but if you take samples and send them off to get analyzed the yes it could get expensive. However, things may be quite obvious..

He looked like a very sweet boy! Did you ever do any further testing or did the vet indicate what they thought happened? Again, so sorry for your loss.
