My Golden Retriever, Tucker 8 years of age developed a 3 inch tumor under the right elbow literally overnight and his health has declined very rapidly.
He was fine Friday, then limping in pain on Saturday when we noticed a tumor/lump under his right elbow that positively wasn't there the day before. We had it sampled and on Monday, the biopsy showed it malignant but localized. The plan was to remove it. But all of the sudden my dog become extremely ill and started throwing up, and was lying around staring at the wall all day showing no emotion. Tuesday morning, he was so sick we took him back to the ER and Vet said my dog was in septic shock which they said was caused by histamine release from acid in his gut which he was throwing up. He had surgery Tuesday (12/4/2012) to repair a hole the acid caused in his gut. How, or is it possible for a Dog to develop a malignant tumor in one day, followed by sepsis and is now in critical care?
The progression was seriously:
Friday=Fine Saturday=Tumor/Limping (not ill) Sunday=Throwing up Monday=Lying in Same Position all Day Tuesday=Grey Gums, Near Death, Sepsis.
What really happened? How come the Vet didn't pick this up on Saturday when the Tumor was there and shrugged it off as no big deal, don't worry blah blah blah. Now my dog may not make it another week. How do you develop cancer in one day?
I never bothered to ask what kinds of crap my gardener sprays on the plants outside. I'm not blaming anyone but I do seek answers because I cannot accept my dog dying this fast with so much oblivion in our vet community. I personally struggle with health problems for which have not either been pinpointed buy all the dozens of Phds and MDs I have seen. Telling me I Lupus, or Psorasis, or Rosecea or Multiple Auto Immune Syndrome. I have been told to eat Gluten Free, Sugar Free, don't eat Red Meat avoid Mercury, avoid GMO food. I am setting here no better now then 5 years ago, yet I expect an answer for my Dog in 3 days? Wishful thinking. Who knows. Everyone talks about cures for cancer and whatnot. Well I think vet medicine and human medicine need to be assimilated because enough cures can come from analyzing deaths like this. Tuckers death can be labeled as either:
A. Complications from Cancer
B Septicemia
9/10 times, you hear people or dogs "Dying of Cancer" or "Dying of Complications from Cancer" but no one knows why. Well, you rarely hear the actual cause of death.
Well, this "Cancerous" tumor appeared on Saturday, but was not present the day before.
Maybe I'm living under a rock but I never knew cancer can develop in one day. This seems like a specific "event" made it appear.
Its the same thing with AIDS (Auto Immune Deficiency) caused by a Virus.
Well, if your Immune System is deficient, then you are susceptible to Sepsis too.
So if there was no virus, then what Carcinogen caused Tuckers immune system to fail which lead to sepsis.
Don't you think we should be studying these "events" or what caused these "events" either poisons, or trauma or whatever for future medical research.
If only our furbabies could talk. I'm a believer it was there long before you noticed. My Cody's tumor showed up out of the blue one day pushing his eye out of the socket. He died exactly 2 weeks later. I know he had to be suffering without my knowledge
I am so terribly sorry for this sudden loss, I know it is a shock and very unfair that you didn't even get time to process it.
I think there really must have been other areas of cancer that were not identified in addition to the tumor under his leg, and they probably had been there much longer than you were aware.
I am so sorry for your loss. I empathize with you - we lost our Oakley almost 2 weeks ago - out of the blue, no signs except sudden weakness and lethargy, xrays showed hemangiosarcoma and he was put to sleep less than 3 hours later. Cancer is an awful horrid disease that I detest..... it throws curve balls with devastating outcomes. Rest peacefully Tucker.
Are you having a necropsy done? That would be the first step to getting a definitive answer as to what the issue was..... if the cancer was primary to somewhere else and had metastasized to his leg, etc. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.
Hi there, my sweet golden kalvin developed lung cancer in may and the vet said he had weeks, but it progressed quickly and took him way too soon. I am still in mourning. I understand and feel your pain. I will say prayers for you and know you are not alone in going through this time. -tes
Doing a necropsy may shed some light. They can look at every organ, and see if there were any tumors on the inside.
I am so sorry for your loss. Its one thing to lose a dog from a long sickness then one so suddenly, you dont have the time to prepare. Just dont dwell on the what ifs for too long, it will eat you up. (I know easier said then done). Just treasure the memories you had with your dog and remember him that way. Your in my thoughts and prayers.
I will look into this. How long do they have before its too late to do the necropsy. Is it very expensive? I know there is an elephant in the room but its a **** invisible elephant.
thanks for all your kind regards. really appreciated. I will scan some pics soon, but its to hard for me right now to look at him. cant explain, but I don't even want to think about him right now.
Our girl died four days after being pronounced in perfect health only a week before she started to get sick.
It's terribly shocking, however I have heard many stories just like it.
Advice isn't probably going to help, however we chose to have her put to sleep at home. It was the right decision for all of us. She is still here in her own garden, and we like to think she's still watching over things.
Most animals just don't live as long as people, so when you decide to love one, you're most likely eventually going to have to deal with end of life issues.
Everyone has their own thoughts about this, however for us, making her end comfortable and painless was the most important thing.
I'm so very sorry for your sudden loss of Tucker. It's especially tough when you have no time to prepare. We lost our Maddie in a day so I know what you are going through and how difficult it is to have so many unanswered questions. I'm really sorry. Run free Tucker
Tucker was a beautiful guy! I'm so sorry for your loss.
